Coolant Temp and Oil Temp Delta

Hi all,

I think I already know the answer but at temp my coolant temp never gets above 180 and my oil temp gets up to 215 - 220. First of all is the 180 coolant temp low i.e. thermostat stuck open or am I having oil cooler issues? The coolant is clear of oil.

Thanks,

Mike

Looks like you have 2 issues. Low coolant temp...probably weak thermostat. High oil temp...probably plugged oil cooler.

Replace the thermostat first, if you purchase an OEM thermostat it comes with a new housing. After you install the new thermostat take the truck for a drive ( empty ) and get it up to full operating temp 185*-190*, drive the truck at 65 on a level road for 20 minutes or so then check the temp spread.

I have noticed a new t-stat can help close the gap a little, like 2 degrees. I'm not sure a new t-stat will close a 30-40 degree gap.

Looks fine. Was that after idling a while or cruising unloaded or something else?

What is wrong with your gauge? where it's needle points to zero but the digital reading is 211?

hahaha, that was good I was using all digital gauges unit recently -- now my favorite is the half gauge meter style -- gives hi and lo and current digital, plus is an easy glance at (probably why I noticed).

So 02expy: have you tried other gauges? Maybe post up what the actual PID/Gauge settings are...

Also should put up the fan gauge. Really those temps look fine, my fan picks up at around 210 and drops pretty quick as it comes down -- oil takes a bit longer to follow. My biggest deltas are after a good climb -- hit 18 deg on the way down the hill on I80 coming into Vallejo on the way to the coast (it was 98 outside tho)...

Funny, but ignorance can be bliss or data can cause paranoia -- I go with the latter myself...
