226 Crankshaft Seals

Are the 239 V8 crankshaft rope seals the same thickness as the 226? I bought a FelPro gasket set and the rope seals do not come in it. I would like to use the Best Gasket's graphtite seals but they are not as available for the 226 as the V8's are. Since you trim these seals to length anyway, as long as they are not too short and the thickness is the same I would think they would work. Anyone know the difference if any?

They have different part numbers, so I'd assume not the same. The 226 seals soiund like they are rectangular from the Parts Book description.

My personal experience is that with either FelPro or Best Graphtite ropes, it's 99% fitting that determines whether they leak or not.

Are you looking for the Crankshaft seal or the Oil pan seal?
Crankshaft seal 7HA6701- Green
Oil pan 7HA6701A- Red

Nobody stocks the red, but the green are available:

Green Sales, OH 513-731-3304 has 5
Dennis Carpenter 704-786-8139 has 14
Antique auto parts, TX has 1
NOS parts, TX 972-937-2201 has 7

It's really two halves of the same seal. I'd be surprised if they don't just provide extra-long pieces that get cut to length for each side, and since they are both 7/16" x 11/32", it's hard to believe they aren't the same piece. Maybe one is slightly longer to preload? Different materials?

Interesting, they show different P/N's for 48-51 and 52-53 V8's. There is no difference in the crankshafts or block in that area across all years.

Yes, I believe they are both the same. I need both halves for both the rear and the front. They come with the complete engine gasket set from Best Gaskets but not with the Felpro for some odd reason. They are rectangular on the 226. Are they round on the V8?

Yes, round in V8. Doesn't mean it couldn't work in the 6. I'll measure mine in the morning.
