Unhappy Transmission trouble

I have a 2006 F250 Lariat super Duty / 6.0 L engine / 143000+ miles / once started and transmission shifted into drive it takes 5 seconds or more for it to engage hard or if I build up the RMS then it jumps into gear hard, after it gets going it feels like I am driving on a washboard until it get warmed up good 10 mile or so. Is it the transmission filter and if so which one, I understand there is a small one on the outside of the transmission if so where? I can't find it.
Not much of a mechanic but short on money

How is your fluid level and condition ? I would drop the pan and inspect for debris and change the filter and fluid . Some had an external filter in the cooler lines closer to the front of the truck I think . also scan for codes

If your internal filter needs to be changed it is because the trans has failed. There is an external filter under the radiator on the passenger's side of the truck. If it is plugged it will bypass and not cause this issue.

Has the trans fluorescent been changed? Old, dirty fluid can cause solenoids to stick. Your symptoms are those of a sticky solenoid or low trans fluid.

Transmission trouble

The fluid is good and just added Lucas transmission additive was told that would take care of the problem but it has not
How hard is it to change the fluid? Do I have to drop the pan? If I have to drop the pan how much harder is it to change the filters?
Sorry but don't like doing the same thing over and over, last time I tried such (on a car years ago) had trouble getting the pan to seal so had a leak
How many quarts of fluid do I need?

Thank You

If you saw this before I deleted it, ignore it. It will NOT work on your 2006.

Take it to your ford dealer ASAP and get it flushed. Lucas is snake oil that will not help anything. You need a heated flush because there is a thermostat in the transmission.

The same motions all still apply. Perhaps some extra fluid just to be safe.

Except that it won't work.

There is an internal thermostat that needs to open. How do you get it to open and stay open? Unless you get it to open you will just mix the old and new fluids, you won't change the fluid.

I wouldnt put an additive in the tranny personally. If you have good fluid and the tranny is not operating properly something is physically wrong be it a stuck solenoid or bad clutches that stuck the solenoid. The 5r had alot of solenoids that are finicky about the fluid used. Using the wrong fluids will make a rebuild more of a mess to clean up later

Thank you
Now to get the stuff and get started
Think I may just change the fluid first and see if that resolves the problem, I certainly hope so.
Thanks again

Now I have read a few more post and confused again, Hot flush or just change the fluid, or fluid and filters. I am new at this and can't afford to make any mistakes. About to hook up to my travel trailer and hit the evangelistic trail, don't need broke down on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck

The best way to service your transmission is with a heated flush. Unfortunately you would have to pay a shop for that.

Unfortunately I think it's likely that this will happen anyway if old or contaminated fluid isn't your issue.

I would pull the pan. Inspect it. If the fluid looks like a metallic paint job with glitter in it your going to be looking at a rebuild. While having the pan off id replace the remote filter under the passenger front fender near the bumper. assuming you dont find a bunch of metal in the pan. With the pan dropped your looking at about 10qts of fluid. You need to be very adamant about using the correct fluid. Mercon sp if you can find it or mercon lv. Dont use mercon or dextron fluid.
