E-fuel filter choices

I'm working on my e-fuel system soon due to my hpop gasket leaking.
Looked at all the premade system, seems like filter microns are all over the place. 150,100,30 microns for pre pump side. 10,5,2 micron on the post pump side. The factory is like 14 microns.
Is the factory 14 microns too coarse and wearing out injectors?

I'm no authority, but I would think that anything with a micron rating smaller than the stock (14 micron?) filter would be an improvement. I think 2 would be overkill, but I guess that would be fine too as long as you don't mind changing it more often. My old truck had almost 400k miles on the stock injectors with the stock fuel system on it so I doubt that the stock fuel filter lets enough through to really wear the fuel system much.

In theory the smaller the filter rating the cleaner the fuel will be, but then again the filters catch more so they clog up faster too. Pick your poison, in my opinion. I think I would likely get what was most readily available locally, but that's just me.

I don't know the ratings on my filters but I could sure get you some numbers and brand name on both of mine if you want.

I just changed my stock OEM filter (motorcraft) and it has a 7 micron rating. I believe the filters on the 6.9 and 7.3 (pre powerstroke) were around 12 or 14 micron.

I wish I remembered the specifics, but there is an actual and nominal micron rating, or something.
You need to compare them the same way. Brand X's rating might seem better than brand Y's rating, but it might be a nominal rating and actually be worse than brand Y's actual micron rating.

Read the specs and you should see what I mean.

Otherwise a pre-filter in the 50 range and post filter in the 5 micron range should work fine.

30 on the suction side seems a bit tight to me. Pumps like to push and not suck.
I would stay in the larger microns on the suction side. I don't know maybe 30 is fine. ??

This question will show my ignorance of the SD trucks, but don't they have a single filter after the pump from the factory? If that's the case I would think that any filter before the pump would be an improvement in filtration (and maybe a slight downgrade in pump performance). I know most guys install a water separator and filter before the pump but am I wrong in thinking that there is no such protection on a SD truck?

That's true, they have the same intank rock catcher that we have.
So I could just run a 2 micron water separator filter after the pump.
I could add a 50 or 150 micron clear secondary pre pump rock catcher if needed.

The Superdutys have a nylon type mesh canister built into the fuel pickup in the tank. I wouldn't really call it a filter, but it screens out the bigger things that get into the fuel. I just learned about this chasing power problems on my son's Early 99 F450, which turned out to be injectors that were susposed to have been rebuilt by that Sniper Injector guy.

Yeah, and those things seem to always plug and give loss of power issues.

Oh boy, another victim!
You are not alone, lots of reading on .org about him.

Ya, my son pulled the injectors and had them tested at the place that I used to rebuild the pumps on the old IDIs, andnone passed the flow test. He called the Sniper Guy to see if he could get a refund, and the guy wanted him to send them back to him, the son said no I want my money back. Sniper said I'm out of business, deal with it and hung up. Live and learn I guess.

I'm putting my kit together with the 4770 bases.
I'm using a 30 micron pre-filter/water-separator #3367 (per multiple threads here on FTE), and a 2 micron post filter #3528.

I haven't personally tried them out yet though.

I'm gathering parts now too. 50 micron clear inline filter, pump, then a 2 micron water separator/filter. #3005
