E40D - OEM Trans gasket....rubber or cork?

Hello--

Does anyone know if the OEM Motorcraft transmission gasket is rubber or cork?

I am getting ready to service my trans and my new Motorcraft filter did not come with a gasket. What is on the truck now is cork but I am not sure if that is OEM or not.

Fel-Pro is what is available at O'Reillys. On order and will know later this evening if the FP is rubber or cork. is Fel-Pro of good quality?

Does anyone have the Motorcraft part # for an OEM trans gasket?

Thanks!

My old pan gasket was rubber with metal inserts for the bolt holes

Whe I get home I will post up the part number of the gasket and the trans pan with a drain plug. Well worth the money if you plan to keep the truck for awhile.

Your truck takes a cork gasket.
The rubber one with the metal inserts will not work and will leak very bad unless you change to a newer pan.

Don't ask me how I know.

Thanks Evan. Looking forward to getting those part numbers from you; I do plan on keeping truck for a while.

The Fel-Pro one is like a semi-stiff rubber. No metal inserts. Is this one OK?

At which point did the pan change for a different gasket?

The easy way to tell is if the pan says on it that it uses a reusable gasket, it is the rubber gasket.

My 1994 with a Build tag of April 05, 1994 on the side would not take the rubber gasket with the metal inserts.
So I had to change pans as I had another E4OD laying around so I used the pan off of it.
I am guessing 1995 was the change year.

The 4/05/1994 tag is in the image below (BD-4D05), there was not a "I" Month (year, month and day):

Save yourself headaches down the road and always use a new gasket. My experience with "reusable" rubber gaskets is they're prone to leak when temps get a little colder during the winter months.

So, it appears the cork gaskets are not readily available at O'Reillys or Auto Zone, They can't even order one, as it's not in their system. So dealer is only option right now.

What about rubber gaskets with no inserts, as the Fel-Pro I described in my above post? May be moot if I go with a new drain plug pan. I believe the drain plu pan uses a reuseable rubber gasket.

On the later pans with drain plug.......

Will they fit the earlier trans (like '92)? Are they advisable to use and why?
Do they use a different filter?
When the trans is drained aren't you only draining a few quarts, like 3 out of 14? Seems like that would not be of much benefit when you still have 11 quarts of old fluid remaining in trans....so why the plug?

FILTERS:

I've read of problems with the filters on the E40D slipping down and causing problems. These filters are friction type and slide on with nothing to hold them. I've heard of clips that can be made or purchased and that use one of the valve body bolts to attach clip and hold the filter in place. It appears to be a small L or Z shaped type of bracket. Thoughts?

Thanks

Thanks
The remaining fluid is in the torque converter, not the trans itself, so the pan drain plug is nice if you also have a torque converter with a drain plug (some have it, some don't) since all you have to do to drain all of the fluid is pull the plugs on the converter and pan.

The internal filter does not need to be changed until the trans is rebuilt. I don't recommend dropping the pan or removing a drain plug to change oil.
