1994 E40D Hard Shifting / Late Shifting Help

I have a 1994 F350 with a 7.5L and the E40D transmission shifts really hard and sometimes late. Im not exactly sure on how to fix it without putting in a new trans witch is a last resort. Now at first i checked the Trans Fluid and it looks great, not dark and doesn't smells burnt. Then i took a quart of Fluid out and put a bottle of Lucas in it, really did nothing. Then i checked the ABS sensor in the rear diff. and its fine the spedo doesn't jump. I put in a new "cheap" Neutral Safety Switch (not from ford automotive) and it actually got slightly better. Im not sure if i get a better one from ford if it will fix the problem completely, i doubt it, but uncertain. But is there anything anyone else can think of that could resolve this issue I would be greatly thankful!!

Replace the transmission...just kidding.

Check your fuses in the cab. There is one in there that will blow on my truck and I get the same thing you are describing. I don't remember exactly which fuse it is but I think it's on the top...but test them all.

Evidently you didn't get the memo.. this transmission is 100% computer controlled and it's doing EXACTLY what the computer is programmed to make it do when there is ANY sensor problem. So pull the codes and make repairs to fix whatever problem is flagged even if it's not directly related to the transmission.

Get a paper clip, warm up the engine then do this: http://web.archive.org/web/201104301...tion.com/?p=13

Or if you do not like counting flashes purchase an Equus/Innova 3145 from Amazon:

Late and hard is almost always a TPS sensor, but pull the codes before replacing parts.

I pulled all the codes and the only one that came up is the HEGO sensor is a bit lean but i changed the TPS sensor and nothing happened, any other ideas

Well a lean code won't directly affect the transmission programming. However, if your engine is running too lean, it may require much more throttle than normal, which will cause a higher TPS reading, which will make the transmission shift harder and later than it normally would.

I'd start by addressing the lean code. Fuel pressure is a good place to start. ~40 PSI key on engine off. ~34 PSI warm idle, with 39-40 PSI on a wide open snap.

Do you think by any chance it could be the wire harness for the solenoid or the solenoid itself thats making it shift hard.

When was the trans serviced last? You said the fluid looked good and not burnt but how about the trans filter how old is it. If your running lean it could be like mentioned above more acceleration to get it upto speed. I thought I was having problems with my transmission slipping or not shifting fast enough and then banging in. I changed my Ait filter that was dirty dirty and had debris floating around in there that was plugging it off. I had to drive it harder to make it run and shift. I changed the air filter and its a lot better.

What was the code, by number, and when was it displayed? i.e. during the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests, Continuous Memory (CM) or Key On Engine Running (KOER) tests.

The code was 172
