Get a single mass.

I replaced my DMF with a DMF and it self-distructed like a year or 2 later. I was pretty pissed to have to do it all over again.

^^^^^ +1; leaving a DMF in after clutch job is potential trannycide.

turns out all the pieces i found are pieces of the dmf. pieces of springs and what appeared to be brake pad material and some other scraps of steel. i assumed it was clutch but this flywheel looks like it exploded

Springs are probably from the DMF. Brake pad material sounds more like the clutch... While there is an internal clutch in the DMF, there is no way that would drop out in the truck, its buried in the center.
Although there are plastic pads on the ends of the springs that might look something like brake material if dirty and busted up? *shrug*

Either way, go SMF, its cheaper and more reliable.

Springs jettisoned from the flywheel prob. worked their way to the clutch, and shredded a bunch of material off the friction surfaces. Yeah, you dodged a bullet there; those flying bits have been known to grenade the tranny case.

I went through this last spring around this time. spent a lot of time pricing things out. smf is absolutely the way to go. I ordered the conversion kit from autozone for $385 it came with everything needed except fluids. It has worked fantastic. the clutch is better than it ever was before.

so i did the smf and new clutch. the gear chatter is very very loud. i filled through the top with 2 gallons of 30wt non detergent hearing that doing that would quiet the gear rollover noise. its got me wanting to go back to the dmf. how loud should it be? its loudest when stopped in neutral foot off clutch. depress clutch and its silent. get to about 1200 rpms and its silent.

I hope you live where it is warm. I assume it is a ZF 5 speed. 30 wt in those and they won't shift in cold weather. Ask me how I know. They are nosier with SMF because there is no buffer to the power strokes of the diesel that the DMF provided.

How loud should it be? If you can still hear the motor over the roll over noise, you're within spec!
