How hard is it to install and slideout awning

Hello fellow campers, I am looking at installing a slideout topper to my 2006 keystone sprinter fifth wheel. My slide out measures 156" or 13'. I am very mechanically inclined and own a cabinet shop so tools aren't a problem either. Also does anyone have any suggestions on the best brand to go with.

Yes, Youtube is a good resource in this instance. You want to make sure you get all the new holes you are going to drill into the side of your camper sealed up good.

The task is pretty straight forward even without YouTube as the directions that come with them are easy to follow. I tend to favor the Carefree as I think it is a bit faster to install, but the difference between that and Dometic's A&E is pretty minor. No special tools involved and the spring tension is so much less than the patio awning it is hard for me to image anyone could get hurt doing it. Just study the directions before you begin and stick with them.

On the other hand, the saving for awning installation is not huge if you go with small shops and independents. The big dealers make a killing on awnings.

The one thought I have about Youtube is some of the stuff is really good and some is pure "cowboy". Watch several to note the differences and find a general theme.

My two cents worth,

Steve

The fabric and roller tube is assembled as it the cover depending on which model you order and the hardware is separate in a plastic bag, if I am recalling correctly (I work on so much stuff it all runs together.)

Make sure to buy the length recommended by the manufacturer. Do not just pick out a size. For example, on a Dometic A&E you use the outside flange to outside flange measurement. If you go crazy big, you go beyond the reach of the mounting hardware. Just follow the catalog and all will be good.

Almost forgot. The fittings are cast aluminum so they are brittle. Handle them with care when loading as they are not hard to break (Don't ask me how I know.)

From flange to flange my slide out is 156" and A&E says I need a 162". Looks like I will have to use my car hauler to go pick it up as I don't want it sticking out 6' from the back of my truck..
