'07 sport trac-front wheel bearing

I have a '07 sport trac in, with a totally destroyed l/f wheel bearing. It was so far gone, that a large portion of the bearing housing was destroyed. I was able to get the bearing assy. off, and found that the half shaft was bad. I believe that I must remove a ball joint to get the half shaft out and another one in. Am I right? if so, how is this accomplished? If not, does any one know the procedure?
Thanks.

the axle shaft comes out as a unit. You may have to pop the upper spindle ball joint loose and pull the spindle out a couple inches to get the axle out of the hole.

Thanks Steve, I was able to remove all the parts. After disassembly, I found that the damage reached the spindle - it was gouged up into the top retaining bolt hole. I don't know if this is going to be an issue down the road, but the bearing housing went in snugly, and everything else went/ is going alright. I really could use the torque values for the axle nut, the ball joint nuts (both), the bearing housing bolts, the tie rod nut, and the caliper bolts.
Thanks again.

After putting it all back together, I didn't like it, so I replaced the spindle and now all is well.
