L hubs /'71/'72 F250 4x4 w/3.5M front axle

I am having trouble finding a pair of original Ford factory locking hubs (external), for my '72 4x4 Highboy, with the 3.5M (3500 lb.) axle... anybody out there know where I can find a set, or parts to rebuild my original ones.

Help please... and thanks in advance, if you can help..

ND,

If you see this post, can you find the original part number for the Ford locking hubs for the 3500 lb front end? I need the Ford number, and know you know how to find it... thanks amigo, you sure have been a help in the past...

IIRC the original Ford hubs were made by Warn. When my brother's Bronco melted the plastic selection ****, he replaced it with a Warn **** at a much cheaper price than the dealer's Ford ****. The Ford lettering was pretty expensive. I would just buy Warns directly from one of the supply houses.

DC sells replacement ***** for around $12. Apiece. They are original Ford tooling and even come in Motorcraft packaging. If you already have a set of hubs this will usually be the fix.

DC is Dennis Carpenter reproducer of a lot of parts for many ford vehicles. Just checked out his website and found this. Lock Out Hub Actuating **** | Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts not sure if it's what you need though. I think these came with 2 d44 axle choices. A small hub and a large hub hd version. This is where ND is great help can tell exactly jest you need and clear up any confusion.

Yes, sorry- Dennis Carpenter. If you have the 3500 axles that is the Dana 44HD. Here is a link to the *****
Lockout Hub Actuating **** | Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts
Looks like they're out of stock at the moment, But probably not for long. I just bought these a couple months ago for my '71 highboy and couldn't be happier. The ***** are the weak link in the assembly, a small steel shaft runs across two holes in the base of the ****. When you twist the **** that little shaft rotates along a sort-of cork screw and that's what pulls the gears apart or allows them to engage. I've found that most of the time these hubs stop working its because the plastic **** breaks where the little shaft runs through it. In my case it caused the hubs to be stuck engaged. Easy to rebuild the unit with a new ****, also if the allen bolts look old you can find black or stainless new ones at hardware stores like Ace. Hope this helps.

While shown in his catalog, Carpenter no longer has any of the red *****. These ***** were NOS, not repro's.

Thanks ND, and as always, you come through with the straight skinny. Now, I am thinking that my only option is to find a good machine shop, and have the parts made, unless, you know of somebody who already does the rebuild on these old hubs. I did find some re-pros, made in Brazil, and they fit, but now when in 4x4, and on the sand, the truck 'Jumps' at randomn intervals, like every 200 to 300 yds or so Its like it jumps out of 4x4 for a half a second or two. ?? My thinking is that perhaps the spring, in one of the hubs, does not hold it 'IN' lock... While driving slow, and having a local mechanic walk next to the truck, he points to the right hub.... the new ones from Brazil... at any rate, I will look for a rebuild on my old ones...

Thanks amigo

I think new springs and a good fresh greasing and you'll be set. Right now they aren't locking all the way so they can jump out back and forth. Part number on the spring is D2TZ1A054A. Call these guys:
NOS Parts.....shows 5......972-937-2201
Pleasantville Ford .....shows 1.......914-769-1800

Again, Muchos Gracias amigos, especially for the spring locations.. I am now thinking that they might have some of the other parts, in case something else is broken in my hubs. I have them in San Diego, as trucked them North with me.
Unfortunately, I am in PA right now, working (ugh), and will not be back to SD unitl mid May... My problem, I will work on it... I will locate, and order all the parts I can, as it will not hurt me to have them on hand, not that I am a hoarder, just want to be prepared..

Again, thanks very much

There's something wrong with being a hoarder and a Pack Rat?
(Hio, if you come up with a pic of a hoarder I'll fall off my chair)

As to something being wrong with a hoarder, that is probably a very true statement, considering the readily availabiliity of parts in the USA, but there are about 5.7 billion people who do not have that advantage. Those of us that have places & trucks, in remote locations, like 1000 miles south of the border, hoarding truck parts is considered being "prepared"... To avoid unessary down time for my old truck, I try to have several boxes, full of parts for the old guy.. Normal stuff like oil, filters, plugs, and wires, are easily found, but stuff for a '72 Highboy is getting rare to find. I guess I could be considered a Jr. Hoarder of hard to find parts.

Find me some hubs amigo... the big ones for the 3.5M front end...Dana 44HD

Go for some Warn Premiums which have no plastic parts in them so they can last for another 40 years.
