engine swap?

I have a 97 with the 5.4 triton. Back in january the head gasket blew completely and let water into the engine. I pulled the engine and tore.it town, and its junk. I found a 99.expodition with the 5.4 today with a good engine, but have been told that a 99 5.4 wont work on the 97 or 98 models. Is this true??? If it is true what can i do to make the swap.possible? Change the computer system and wiring harness? Can anyone give me the right answer to this? Cause i can get the complete expodition for 600.00

I thought the 99+ 5.4 was coil-on-plug and the 97-98 wasn't.

Getting the same year or vintage motor will make your job much easier. I helped my neighbor swap out an Explorer engine and it was a nightmare because the wiring harnesses were different because the engine wasn't the same year/ model. Long story short, he had to change the cluster, computer, keys, etc from a donor vehicle that was the same as the new engine. Troubleshooting took months!

I talked to a local salvage yard today and he told me that 99-03 can be used and the only thing i would have to do is use the intake off my old engine on the newer one and flip the intake.gasket. so i guess i will now be on.the lookout for a engine since the expodition i found has already been sent to.the scrap yard :/
