Sterling 10.5 SRW Gear Swap

I have a 1999 Sterling 10.5 SRW Rear End with stock open 3.73's and looking to install an Eaton/Detroit, etc with 4.88s or 5.13s (not decided yet).

Will an Eaton/Detroit, etc with 4.88/5.13 just drop in the 3.73 open carrier?

I know on some vehicles you have to change the carrier if going for larger gears AND/OR a locker/limited slip.

Thanks Tex,

I see, so there IS a carrier break on these. Cool, but sucks for me as the rear is 3.73 so looks like I need another carrier case for the lower gears. Any ideas on where to hunt for a 4.56+ case?

Some of the excursion owners have installed 4.88 gears, I would check out there threads before buying extra parts.

Hav24wheel, and WE3Zs are the members I know of.

Why do you need such a tall gear? Towing? Tire size increase? What engine are you running as well?

Thanks for the heads up Bently. I'll check to see what the excursion guys are doing.

The rear is a spare that I have and I wanted to use it underneath a 5.8L Bronco with much lager tires. I would also use the D60 front axle as well. Both seem to be nice big upgrades from the Dana 44 front and 8.8 rear.
