starter sounds like the gear is striped~help please
Per as I sit here stranded at the gas station in a Per curious position after trying to push start a (loaded flatbed loaded with scrap steel) 460 with a sound that can only be explained as a stripped starter gear. This is my second starter since I've owned the truck and the previous starter did the same. Thing any information would be helpful thank you for your time[/B]

Pull the starter. If the gear and the flywheel teeth you can see look ok, then the one-way bearing in the starter gear(commonly known as the Bendix) is probably bad. This clutch bearing lets the starter turn the flywheel, but won't let the flywheel turn the starter if the key is accidentally held on a little too long. This clutch bearing can go bad, and it won't drive and sounds like gear clashing.

On a stickshift flywheel you can replace the ring gear a ring with teeth on it heat or cut ring gear off with cutting torch .to replace ring gear lay on flywheel heat up till it goes on then take drift punch and tap all the way around making sure its seated. on a Auto trans flywheel the ring gear teeth ring is welded on meaning you need to replace the complete flywheel or Flex plate as stated is the common turn .both do the same thing.

Wrong I have changed a lot of ring gears on stick shift fly wheels The ring gear and flywheel are 2 separate parts .I heard of guys welding the ring gear on Auto flex plates never seen anyone do it nor have I tried .It would be a very tricky operation to weld one on and turn out right plus it has to be balanced.

Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - bullnose1985's Album: repair album - PictureI will check the flywheel teeth tonight unless it's raining. The teeth on the starter gear are warn but just the end of the teeth. I am not sure how to put a picture on this post but I am uploading to my album. I will also post what I think is the difference between a manual transmission starter and a automatic transmission starter.

460 starter fix finally.
Hello Friends,
Had to go get ANOTHER starter as i was installing it i noticed that one of the bolts was sloppy so i got the idea to take some old brass keys break off the bottoms and bend them while starter loosely bolted. Take a (standard) screwdriver place it opposite of the flywheel where the nose cone meets the bump on the bellhousing.
Applying slight pressure on the screwdriver, enough to push those copper key peaces into the crescent shaped void.
Tighten bolts to spec and you are done.. Good luck to all. If i have anymore updates i will post.
