Powerstoke decisions

Hey guys I am new to FTE and currently have an 02 F-150. I am looking to get a new truck however sometime in the coming year and want it to be a powerstroke. Can anyone give me some good ideas on what to get? All I would be using it for is a daily driver and the occasional towing. Fuel Mileage is not a huge factor just want something around 15 mpg around town or higher. The real question is which PSD would be the easiest to upgrade and be able to out run other diesels the easiest. Thanks for the advice!

First off welcome to FTE!

you might have better luck asking down in the diesel sections but the 6.0 (03-07) and 6.4 (08-10) trucks can be problematic not always if you maintain them but it really depends if you are going used what the previous owner did and how they took care of it. The new 6.7 (2011+) seems to be a great engine and many people love it same with the 7.3's (99-02, these years are for the super duty not including OBS years).

Someone else will probably chime in soon but the 7.3 from what I have read is not that fast if your looking to outrun people. Keep in mind I'm talking about stock trucks idk how fast people have gotten the 7.3 to go but I bet you can get them to crank fairly decently.

thanks for the reply! I would love to have a 7.3 just was concerned about how it would perform against other diesels. I have my eye on one that my dads friend has. Believe its an 01 F250 xlt 4x4 automatic extended cab with about 135,000 or so and he wants 12k for it. im just hoping he holds on to it for a little while for me to decide for sure

I would recommend that you reconsider. Unless your commute is hwy miles then a diesel will become problematic with the emissions.

I would recommend you consider a new F150 with the ecoboost with max tow.

Speaking of towing..what are you towing when you do and how much weight.

They are turds. A tuned 7.3 has trouble keeping up with a stock 6.0.

So what would you suggest?

that's what i figured with a 7.3, personally If your going diesel i have only heard great things about the new 6.7. Also like stated above, its fun and all to have a diesel but i would make sure its worth it before you just make the switch to diesel.

With 11K as your max then the ecoboost F150 would fit right it. Or a Gas 6.2 F250.

I honestly think that the diesel is not a value for you based upon your use.

My concern is the city driving. I can see about 12 mpgs tops for you.

I agree, unless you tow religiously its probably not entirely worth it. Even still the F150 and the F250 6.2l can handle that fine while getting pretty decent mileage for a truck.

How come you are so concerned with speed? I know we all like to go fast lol just curious why that would be one of the major selling points.

Whatever you want. I would go read the 6.0 and 6.4 sections and make your decision from there.

city driving, stop and go traffic don't work well with the emissions in the diesels now. Not day in and day out.

Well as far as the speed goes I just get tired of people talking crap about fords and how bad they are. As far as my driving it's about 50/50 in town and highway. I'm only getting about 12 mpg now. My dad has a ecoboost but like he even told me. He has owned diesels in the past and just likes the way a heavier truck handles the weight. It's not necessarily a matter of being able to tow that weight but stopping it and handling it around turns especially since I live on a mountain. I have heard good things about 6.0's just don't really want to put the extra money and trouble into bullet proofing it. Their reliability stock is what scared my dad into selling his before it hit 100k. The 6.4 would be a good option. Just here they suck at mileage unless you add tuner, intake, exhaust and remove the emissions stuff. Not to mention I plan on keeping this truck for a pretty good while. Thank y'all for the inputs! It is definatly helpful.

My 7.3 performs great! Its not race car but it pulls everything I put behind it as fast as I want to go.
