Hey, hows this build going? Curious to see how your crossover steering turned out. Getting closer to putting my frame, springs, axles back together so the power steering is next - maybe...how did you end up crossing the steering shaft for outside the frame back over to the inside to meet up with column?? wow didnt think anyone kept up withthis post. Well just to update it the crossover turned out great the newer steering gear is pretty much perfect for what I wanted. im using the original eaton pump with it because I have the 292 and brackets for the saginaw pump are pretty expensive. I will soon be putting the saginaw pump on though the eaton is pretty worn out and can hardly keep up. So far I have a few hundred miles on the steering and no problems to speak of. Im yet to put on a steering damper but so far haven't really needed one. I dont have any pics at the moment but ill take some when I get a chance.

 

Yeah by all means would love to see all the pics, how you made the crossover as I mentioned from outside frame to inside frame meeting with firewall, rag joints, etc. Good to hear you are up and rolling... Ive got a Dana 60 high pinion going in front of my truck, springs are ordered, etc. So once I have the frame back to a roller in a few months, time to get serious and decide which way to go with the steering. Just to be clear I moved the column in my truck. Garbz guided the way on that one I put it where the 65-66 column would be. This made it a lot easier for me to do the crossover on my truck. I used cpp universal joints for the steering shaft trying to keep things as simple as possible. With a dana 60 up front uou could avoid all the machining of the knuckle. Anyways here's the pics.

 

Ok, thats sort of what I imagined, you would need to move the column up on the firewall just below the master cyl to make that angle from outside frame to inside frame. Im now considering the crossover steering as I hear it is much better in regard to reducing bump steer compared to the stock push-pull steering linkages. If I go with the late 77-79 Ford box it puts the box on top of the frame. Pic below is form a guy that did the 77-79 box on a 64 F250 4x4 and kept column location original. Looks like a few joints in there. Thanks again -

 

I had planned on using the ford box but during mock up the power steering pump wouldn't clear the box. Another nice alternative is the toyota box if your looking for the original look. There's a guy with a 59 4x4 I believe his name is Ted that has this setup looks really clean. Hopefully you can get your truck all sorted out soon.

 

Im actually hoping to do this with as many stock Ford parts as possible, then basically get a list and photo journal out to everyone with same year trucks so they can do the same if wanted. No matter what, the original column and shaft will need a mod if people want to use their original. Gotta cut that Gemmer box and shaft. So, possibly a modified 78 column, shaft, and box...we'll see. End of summer target for that part of my build.
