FX4 not really for Off-Road stock?

I'd really love to argue with Russ some more about this, but I'm one of the worst offenders when it comes to dragging threads off topic. I'm trying to knock it off.
For the OP: Here is your off-road equipped truck:
The FX4 or those with the "off road package" don't have anything meaningful over any 4WD pickup truck. Of course the hill descent control and skid plates are neat, they don't really add much in the way of capability.

When I bought my 09 FX4 screw I took the LT truck tire option to get away from the paper skin P rated tires that don't last on the gravel roads in northern Ontario...the Goodyears that come with this option are still lacking in traction but are at least puncture resistant. My first moose hunt showed a lack of clearance on rough bush roads as the 157`wheelbase caused mid truck hangups. I solved this with a 3 inch lift front and back. Traction was solved with an upgrade on the tires. A few upgrades like this should have you doing circles around your wife`s car

I've said for years...since 2008 specifically...that the Pirelli Scorpion is a utter POS tire. It has zero redeeming qualities.
As for stock tires...I loved the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. It's a decent tire that worked nicely offroad in the muck, and had good street manners. I would buy them again. When I bought my Cadillac, I was happy to see that it had a brand new set of them installed.
The Goodyear SR/A is a complete and utter POS tire, much like the Pirelli. I had those on a AWD Durango with the 5.7 Hemi. That thing could do a 4 wheel burnout on dry pavement. No darn traction whatsoever.
Now, reguarding the F-150 as a 4x4 truck...I think it is actually really good offroad. It's more about taking a good line and having good tires. Also, in the above case, you really really need to air down. In my old 2006 F-150 that puppy would sink to the axles within seconds of getting into the sand. They weigh every bit of 6,000 lbs in a crewcab configuration.
sorry you got stuck!

This week we got one of our very rare snow storms that seem to cripple the Virginia coast. However, the mail must still be delivered and off to work I went.
Thank GOD for my truck! Even with the POS Hankooks she performed better than any F-150 that I've owned even with bigger and better tires. I can only imagine how she'll perform with decent meat wrapped around the wheels. This thing is a tank.

Lots of people say that about the Wrangler SR-As that my truck has. I'd buy them again in a minute, they do a fine job in all conditions.

One constant that I've always seen over the last ten years is people complaining about the stock tires. No matter what they are, they are POSes. I've driven with stock highway tread tires and more aggressive treads and really haven't noticed much of a difference until I get in the mud. You'll notice that snow tires look much more like the "POS" Hankook tires you currently have.

I use to hate my truck off road. I put cooper zeon ltz so I would at least not get stuck in wet grass (they were free). I would never recommend those tires to anyone!!!!!!! They don't like to self clean.
Also To me the shocks where to bouncy and soft off road so I put bilstien 5100 all they way around. Now my truck handles a lot better.
I hate the 20" rims on my truck. They scratch if you look at them wrong
My buddy has nitto tara grapplers on his 2 wheel drive chevy and they are amazing! He has never got stuck and I have been Stuck twice.
I will be getting 17in rims and nitto trail grapplers as soon as I can. I will take a hit in mpg as long as I dont have to worry about getting stuck every time I want to go fishing or hunting.

I've have had the Zeon LTZ on two trucks for my summer tires and i love them, great wet and dry traction. mud is no worse then any other all terrain tire and they are even half decent in ice/snow even though i would never run them year round (dedicated studded snow tires for that)

I have michelinfor the summer LTXII tires on my FX4 for the summer and just bought some 285 70 17 Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires for the winter. Best move I made since I bought the truck. The Michelins are ok but not a snow tire. You need to put it 4wd to move in the snow, but the Territorries are fantastic. Now before all you Americans get all wtf over the Territory, they are only available in Canada at Canadian Tire. They look like a mud tire(pattern in the snow) but have extra siping to make it a mountain snowflake designation. I think they would make an excellent mud tire....
