Carb Linkage

Hello to all.
I have a 215 c.i.d. OHV. There is a small link that goes to the carb from the pedal linage ( right behind the carbureted). One end is round and slips over the ball end of the linkage directly to the carburator. There is a clip and spring in the shaft of this link. Every now and then it slips off and the engine goes full throttle. Anyone know how to get it to stay on, or where I can purchase a new one!

Also, my starter cranks and then winds or spins. I'm assuming it's the starter. Is there a particular part of the starter to replace or am I looking at replacing the starter?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The spring inside is likely broken or worn out. Could also be the ball on the carb linkage. Maybe it's worn. Napa may have a replacement. If not, I may have a used one.

Try cleaning the bendix. Examine it for wear. They must be clean and free from heavy lubrication to work correctly.

Couple of quick notes:
If the engine goes into full throttle, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD RETURN SPRING! I totaled one of my 54's when it stuck full throttle due to a mechanical failure. Autozone, etc. sells a universal return spring if that is an issue.

As for the starter. They use a bendix that can and does get weak and fail. I actually found that the ones on 6 cylinder Ford tractors of the same era use the same bendix drive and often available at local tractor stores for less money.

The link itself falls off. I'm going to order one as shown in a previous post.

What does the Bendix look like?

The bendix is the end of the starter that has the screw, spring, and gear.
A temporary repair to the link may be made by squeezing and compressing the end where it falls off the ball. Pliers would be the tool of choice.

There is an "improved" design Bendix out there, no personal experience, other than the old one is a PITA. Shop around, this is the first place I found with it: BENDIX DRIVE, STARTER - Starters - Flathead Ford Performance - Hot Rod Parts

Thank you. Is this the same Bendix/ Starter for a 215 OHV?
Does the Bendix install on the front end of the starter?
These diagrams are great. What maintenance manual are they from?

Thanks again,

That appears to be a bendix for a 239 flathead. I know this because I had to replace the spring in my 51 with the 239 engine.

The 215 starter bending is slightly different. I'll EDIT this post with a picture later today.

EDIT: Here's the starter Bendix for a 215/223.

Thank you for the pic. I assume the bendix can be replaced separately?
A fairly simple task?
