The original fuel pump leaked oil down into it and gummed it all up.
I really like the original having the fuel bowl to drain any water out, the replacement pump from oriellys does not have this feature. So here I am again tearing apart a new part to make a hybrid of the two. I have the new and old pumps both torn down and the old one is soaking in gas to get the gummed up oil out of the bowl. I will post pics after it is reassembled too.

Make sure the filter comes with the mounting gasket for the bowl.
If it's cork, you'll have to soak it in hot water for about 10 minutes before you install it.
In 1967, I bought a minty all original 1955 Packard from the granny original owner for 100 bucks.
She had problems with the engine dying, two mechanics had no clue. She finally gave up, bought a new 1967 Fairlane from the dealer I was working at.
Dumb cluck mechanics: What was wrong...was plain as day. The glass bowl fuel filter was installed directly in front of the carb, was just as filthy as yours.
I backed it out of her garage, it died. I restarted it, revved it up, it died again. I knew what the problem was, opened the hood, looked at the bowl, removed the filter, tossed it away and drove the puppy home.
I felt sorry for the lady, but...
Lower pic: This is the type of inline fuel filter that the Packard had. Similar types had been used on many different vehicles since the 1930's.

NAPA will have them. IIRC, all Ford V8 points are the same.
