Pretty heavy. The 4bt isn't much better in that regard. I wasn't looking for massive power, so I went with the lesser know cummins 6at. 120 hp, same size and same bellhousing as a 292 chev inline six. This is a turbocharged 3.4 litre inline six. In the late 90's they were pretty easy to find when UPS repowered. Not so much now. I have owned three of them, currently two. My '59 f350's frame rails are more than adequate. I would think you'd want to box your frame and beef up your suspension. Mine is shown running in my '59 on youtube. Type in 59 f350 with cummins 6at . Not sure what happened to the member here who drove his f100 to Alaska with a 5 cyl mercedes diesel. Mine has 2 wires and a couple of fuel lines, and plenty of room. It's no 24 valve, pulling the hills, but it works fine for me.

my 54 F100 has 2500 lbs. on the front axle and 1500 on the back with a small block. I can't imagine how pitiful it would be driving in the rain with another 600 or 700 lbs. out front. A while ago I saw where a guy cut his front wheel opening out of the fender and moved it several inches forward. I think that would do a lot to improve the weight distribution and handling of one of these trucks.

You do realize that engine weighs almost twice that of the original engine at 1150 lbs? The 4BT that GB Sisson has weighs in at about 750 lbs, much friendlier to the suspension and handling.

mechmagcn is the one who drove his f100 to Alaska with a 5 cyl mercedes diesel. I haven't seen him post in a while but a quick check shows he looked in on us today.

I'm putting a 24 valve in my 1946 Diamond T it wiring is going o be a night mare.i had to put the motor Behind the cab now all the wires have to be Lengthening.just so I would not have to have custom Radiator and air cooler made.

That might have been me-and my '53 F-100. Keep in mind, it's more than a sheet metal mod; I moved the front axle ahead 4 1/4" as well. That definitely has a major impact on weight distribution.

Joe, Mine's a 6at . The 4bt is still a good choice and way more common than the 6at. It's found in many bread trucks etc. Not as light or smoooooth running as my six.
