1998 EXP 4WD not working

I'm going to look at a 1998 EXP tomorrow and the ad says that the 4WD does not work. Does anyone have an idea of worst case $$ scenario in repairing the 4WD system?

Having done a lot of reading on the forum, i understand it could be as easy as a sensor or as bad as a broken front clutch, i just don't have any idea on costs to repair these items or what the worst case could be.

If everything else looks good i want to know how to negotiate the deal accounting for the 4WD problem.

Thanks for any insight.

If there are parts broken inside of the transfer case you could be looking at a $1K to $2K repair.

$250-$500 for a used transfer case from a junk yard? seems like the best option to me. unless its an easy fix...hell it would be a shift motor..ect

Underneath the front radiator area, there is a vacuum unit that kicks the 4WD in. Pull the vacuum hose and have someone flip the switch to see if you have vacuum. If you do, it may be that vacuum control unit and Advance carries it for around $130.

The problem could be as simple as a broken vacuum line to who knows...
I know there are 3 types of transfer cases made for the 99 yr model.
you have to get the right one. A rebuilt one is better than one from
the "junk yard"...you do not know what you are getting.
