Rear Bumper Cover Restoration

I did the same thing I did to my Cowl with the rear bumper cover. The plastic just turns chalky over time and no amount of armor all or protectant lasts very long. I removed it, cleaned, wiped down with denatured alcohol and sprayed it with about 6 coats of Valspar plastic paint-gloss black from Lowes. Looks really good IMO.

Note, to remove the cover, crawl under the rear bumper and find the 4 white plastic bolts with flatish, self-taping nuts on them. Remove these first. Then the cover pops off upward. Careful not to damage these plastic bolts, you can't buy them seperately, they only come with the cover which is around $90 or so. I didn't removed the nuts and snapped them off. Now I have to find away to attached them to the cover, epoxy maybe.

Looks great.
I wonder how the paint would hold up to the abuse my wife and kids would put it through.

Thanks. I will keep you posted on the durability.

I considered another cover but with how quickly the plastic degrades I couldn't see myself spending another $90-I am cheap I guess.

Hey we are all cheap at times.

Just for future reference if that paint doesn't hold up the step pads can be had for about $53 plus shipping

I was just going to say what's Berry's time worth, surely he's got a couple of hours in that repair. I've seen those trim piece for 48 bucks and up, OEM too. No doubt it looks great but the time he spent on that plus the miles driving there and back yikes.

We'll I bought the paint to use for the cowl as well. Total time no including drying is around one hour. Parts cost are about $6.
