The truck doesn't look too bad. Any known issues?

I ran across a deal a while back on a '97 cab-n-chassis 4x4 5spd. with 125k on it. It had a hay bed on it, but it had been removed cause it cracked the frame at the front rear spring hangers on both sides. I could have got it for $2500, but didn't have the cash at the time.

Not at all. When my neighbor first got it he did a bit of front end work to it and had some other stuff done to it and had the trans rebuilt 3 yrs ago after having it take a dump on him. Well now ( not sure if you saw my other thread about what I think is the foward pump going out in it or the thread before that when I broke the detent spring and found a nut from a selonoid pack in the pan that was never tightened in) I'm starting to have issues of it rolling freely in neutral when in gear and a long shift between 1-2 that has been on and off, overall it's a great truck for the price I (didn't) pay!

I saw your other thread, but I'm no help when it comes to the E4ODs. I'm a ZF guy. If I got a good deal on a truck with an auto trans, I would swap it to a ZF 5spd. first chance I got! LOL! Have you considered doing this, or would you rather stay with the auto?

I have ( my dads 95 being a 5spd and I really like it better that the auto) however I don't really have the funds or time to do that right now (as much as I would like to convert it, I have a 555b ford backhoe that needs a piston, and a head to mess with now) and I'm going to have a family friend check out my e4od and go from there with that. And make a decision. I don't mind the auto, I'd just prefer the manual but the way things are its looking like the truck is going to stay an auto

I hear you on the backhoe. My son-in-law and I just rebuilt the 201 diesel i his 4550 Ford backhoe. If your auto ends up needing a complete rebuild again, a ZF swap would probably be cheaper.

Your probably right. I'd just have to find a decent zf 5 around here. As for the backhoe, it was a different neighbors machine that they were using in The winter and it had a loud bang from the motor , they didn't know what it was so they asked me to pull the motor apart and go from there. Well turns out it dropped a valve. And my dad ( I can't blame him for this bc I would have done the same) bought the thing for the price of scrap bc it would be a useful machine on the farm, now we (I) have to do some work to it
