Thermastat stuck shut?

Three questions:

My factory temp needle used to get close to the R in NORMAL but for awhile now it rarely hits the O, and never gets past the N with no trailer hooked up.

So could it be stuck shut?

Where is your guys needle pointing at?

Also what was is the stock temp on the '95?

It sounds like your is stuck open. Not shut. If your thermo was stuck shut, your truck would overheat.

But, my thermo is stuck open and I never get off the C.

O ya! Open not shut whoops! Would that effect power/mpg? I no my dads ranger is stuck open and its killin the power and mpg cause the computer is telling it to warm up so its dumpin more fuel and less air. Would our motors do the same?

Running a t-stat that is stuck open is not good. The coolant is not regulated and free flows through the engine and does not have time to absorb the heat from the block and carry it to the radiator. The gauge will read cool because the coolant is not absorbing the heat, and the engine is actually running hot.

This sounds reasonable, but after an hour and a half of freeway driving, my Snap-On Solus Ultra still said my EOT was 148 and wouldn't run a CCT.

That's pretty low EOT. Are you sure your stat is stuck open? Is the temp sensor good? I may be wrong on what I said. Might be more applicable on gas engines.

Depends heavily on ambient temp. Also when you replace the stat make sure to get thecorrect length. Fwiw its in the 30s and mine just gets into the n and maybe to the o...good heat though.

New temp sensor. Heat will dissipate into the coolant if it's flowing or not. Heat moves to a place of lower temperature regardless.

It was also in the low 30's that day, and at highway speeds, that queen sized rad. Will keep the coolant nice and chilly

Mine did the same thing. The thermostat wasn't sticking but it had a rubber gasket around the edge of the valve that was 3/4 gone.

So where's a good place to pick up a new one? I looked on dieselsite but they only listed them for '96 and newer rigs.

143 is low.

Had a guy tell me he installed an international pump and his truck was now running 173 the other day as well with a 196 t-stat. *facepalm*

The t-stats for our trucks tend to fail if you pick them up at the parts store. Mine doesn't operate properly itself.
Worked great for about 3 months.

Whats the stock T-Stat temp for ours? And is there any cheaper alternative to Ford for a good one?

Rob, I think stock is 195. Dieselsite sells the 203 which works well. I got a 180 from Joey. It works well for me as my truck is usually just ran in the warm months and is towing almost all the time.
