I got some ford racing tall valve covers for my 400 and i can't seem to find the right bolt kit. 2 studs on each valve cover is much longer (above F in ford and G in racing) Does anyone know where i can get a bolt/stud kit that has the longer ones?

 

If i remember correctly in my attempt the to use a socket head bolt a 1/4-20x3.25" was on the short side, and only grabbed about a turn and a half, and a 3.50" bolt is tall and had to use a couple washers for shims. Option 2 is to fabricate a set from threaded rod - measure twice and cut once.

 

I would look at A.R.P. bolts that what i bought when i got my ford racing valve covers

 

I have the same valve covers on my cleveland. I used threaded rod and acorn nuts. I looked everywhere for the correct bolt kit. Having made my own studs has come in really handy for keeping the gasket in place.

The older valve covers which read Ford Motorsport did not route the top two bolts like this, they were all on the flange. I too wonder why they changed them.

 

.. Get 4 of the 1/4-20 x 3.5" stainless steel bolts from the local home center/hardware and cut down to fit... grind a little champfer on the new ends... usually available with hex or Allen socket heads... or make your own studs as mentioned... I'd use the S.S. bolts all the way around...

.. High lift racing cams may have caused large rocker arms hitting the top sides of the earlier high rise valve covers, hence moving the sides out further, necessitating putting upper bolts through the cover...
