Carburetor hose connections? 450cfm on 289
Hi Everyone,
I am having a stumbling bogging issue under light acceleration aka normal driving. but runs great in neutral and when i rev it. I am in the process of rebuilding my carb and just removed it. I noticed four hoses.
EGR hose hooked up to back of carb
Hose going to Vacuum advance for distributor
A steel hose going to exhaust manifold, which broke right off the exhaust manifold when i was removing it from the carb fitting near the choke(which is disconnected)
Another hose which went to the opposite side of the carb but runs also to the exhaust manifold.
My questions is this... Do i need the hoses running to the exhaust manifold and EGR in the valve cover. It is a 1965 ford 289. I heard some guys runs no vacuum lines at all, and some guys always run them.
I am wondering if these lines were the culprits.
I tried the starter fluid spray to try and find a leak but no luck.
Thank you in advance
Regards

Pretty sure '65 289's never had EGR, and EGR isn't on the valve cover. I think you mean PCV? (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Yes you need that connected.
The tube going to the exhaust manifold from the choke is a choke heater tube. Don't know why there would be two? If your choke is disconnected, it serves no purpose and should be plugged at the choke housing.

That won't be a vacuum leak and as Ross said you need it. Your little street engine will not benefit from just a breather cap and it will cause you more problems in the long run.
The second hose you are talking about should be the filtered fresh air for the choke heater and it should go from the carb mounting plate (where the air cleaner sits) to the bottom of the choke heater.
