How would you like 5% off on your fuel cost?

If you are a person with good credit (very good credit) and pay your credit card account balances in full each month, you might be interested in this. Pentagon Federal Credit Union issues a Visa Platinum card which rebates 5% on fuel purchases (bought at the fuel island). So let's say fuel is $4 per gallon, that amounts to 20 cents off for a net price of $3.80 per gallon. The rebate is applied to your next months bill, which I really like.

If you decide to do this you will notice that they say the 5% is reduced to 3% starting 12/31/13. This DOES NOT apply if at the same time you open a Money Market Savings account with $25 or more. With this account in place, you continue to get 5% rebate and no annual fee on the card .

Anyway, thought I would share this...no affiliation.

I've had one of these for a few years, they also give ~2% off for retail purchases I think. A couple weeks ago they sent a notification letter saying that a $25 annual fee is being applied. I'll have to look into that $25 savings account, I had to open one with $10 to get the card.

Yes Travis, no annual fee and continued 5% if you open the Money Market Savings Account.

Here is an email from them, when I inquired:

Thank you for contacting Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

We apologize for the confusion, and for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Yes, as of 9/18/2013 the following qualifying products were added:
  • Thrifty Credit Service
  • Personal Line of Credit
  • Educational Line of Credit
  • Money Market Savings account

You may also open one of these qualifying products to avoid the annual fee:
  • Active checking account with direct deposit of at least $250.00 per month
Installment loan such as an automobile loan, boat loan, motorcycle loan,
    personal loan, and/or educational loan
  • Money Market Certificate
  • IRA Certificate
  • Equity Loan or Equity Line-of-Credit with a balance
  • PenFed Mortgage

Opening one of these accounts will automatically upgrade your account to a Plus PenFed Platinum Cash Rewards Credit Card and you will not only avoid the $25 annual fee, but also maintain 5% cash back on gas purchases made at the pump.

If you need further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely,
Amber Frank
Pentagon Federal Credit Union

A Costco business account American Express gets you 4% (used to be 5%) on all fuel purchases up to 75 gals per purchase made at places other than grocery stores, Wal-marts, etc... Had one for years. Just another way to save.

Costco doesn't have diesel here ...that's all I use other than a wee bit of gas in my Nova and Suzuki (I always fuel them at Costco). This 5% you immediately get back (well, one month) rather than every year like Discover and Costco cards.

I use the Costco American Express at the Sinclair in Sparks and get my 4% the next month just like your credit union. Works at all stations except the grocery store type.

Is there a max per year. Discover has a max then it goes down to like 1% or something like that.

No per year or month max on the Costco A/E, just the limit on gals per transaction at 75 gal. It is 4% for the business account card and I believe the personal account card is 3%, if you don't qualify for the business card. With gas at $4.29/gal and diesel at $4.59/gal here in town it helps make it more palatable if I get stuck getting fuel here as opposed to Reno/Sparks.
