Hello, my 97 has been stuck in 4wd for 2 days now ( OK on vacation and need it to drive on beach) and now it will not disengage. I checked the connection at the motor underneath and it was dry and connected. I tried too cycle the dash switch and can't get it to do anything. Is there a way to get it to default back to 2wd. Thanks in advance for any help.

 

There is a 30 amp fuse in the box under the hood, check it first. If it is good your shift motor may have failed.

Pull the shift motor and see if it rotates when the switch is changed from 4X4 to 2WD. If it does there may be binding in the transfer case that is not letting the shaft rotate. Try jacking up the front end and getting the tires off the ground to unbind it.

You can always manually move the shaft to 2WD while the motor is off if the motor has failed. The transfer case will not leak so you could leave the motor off until you get home and fix it.

You can also tap on the the shift motor while trying to have it move back to 2WD. Sometimes this will jar the motor and make it work.
