390 engine placement
Posted this in the engine forum, but thoughut this would be a good place too.
How far back did you place the motor in a 56 F100? My motor is placed all the way back so the drivers side valve cover barely clears the firewall. However since it's so far back I'm running into issues fitting the sanderson headers with the toyota power steering. The headers I bought are supposed to work for this exact application. So I'm thinking my enginge may need to be moved forward a bit (1" or so) and possibly up too.
Anyone here running this set up? If so how far forward is your engine?
What steering box setup would be smaller than this? I don't need to keep the power steering if it means headers will not fit.

I also used a 351w. I have an IFS so I have a rack and pinion steering up front. That will solve some problems. It isn't a mandatory change as there are guys here on FTE with a 390....they do fit. The usual advice is to offset the engine an inch to the passenger side for steering clearance.
I can say that if you move it forward, you should mock up your radiator mount and radiator so that you can check the clearance that you need up front. I went as far forward as I could because of bell housing clearance on the C6 transmission that I used. To do that without cutting and re-shaping the firewall, I ended up not using the fan on the water pump & going with an electric fan mounted directly to the radiator....which, by the way, works really well.
