help identify paint color

Hello all,

I thought my truck was medium copper. It was what the PO said in conversation. He may not know as the truck was gifted to him.

On my door panel i have only the #2 in the color digit. When i look at 1978 Color Codes - Ford Truck Paint Cross-Reference everything is 2 digits, and medium copper begins with an 8 (second page)

Could it be Coral 2A???

Can anyone help identify this truck? I wanted to paint another project to match.

Chris

In 1978 color code "2" meant "medium copper". All Ford color codes were single digit one color, two digits meant it was two tone, first digit primary color, second digit accent color.
Looking at your warranty plate, it looks like your truck has been repainted.
It looks like there is a masking tape line on the very top edge of the plate.
I would look into some hidden areas to see if the paint is the same, behind the door panels, under the carpet, up under the dash, etc.

Just so you know, in '78 color code 2 on an Econoline meant Tangerine. I think that's closer than medium copper.
If it's a stock Ford color, it could be "Y" which is "orange"

Really nice looking truck by BTW.

Here's a '73 Explorer color code "Y" orange.

The exterior has been repainted but the interior of the cab has not. Did you get a chance to look at the website? None of their numbers match..

I can always buy a 1/2 pint to test.

Are you sure about the interior not being repainted? Like I say, it looks like the jamb section of the door has been repainted and that usually means the interior, at least jambs and inside of the doors, has also been painted.
I didn't look at the link because I use the Ford factory parts catalog to look up the color codes.
I've seen aftermarket color charts use two digits to indicate a single color before, Ford didn't do that. Like I said, if there are two digits in your color code then the truck was originally two tone from the factory. I looked up the 2A code that the chart says is coral. In the catalog 2A means it would have been a two tone that was "medium copper" main color and "black" secondary color, not a very good combination in my opinion.
I really think that if you pull a door panel or lift up the carpet you'll find its copper underneath.
I did go to the color chart you linked and none of those codes match anything the factory used for the trucks.

In the top picture it looks exactly like my 77 which is coral.
Well, my cab is anyway.

I splurged and bought a few 1/2 pints yesterday and shot some color. This is just over the unprepped original yellow paint so it does have bleed through. But it gives the idea.

The ford in my post is certainly Medium copper, here is the original factory chip held against ditzler paint code 2880

Here is the 73 Y code, it is Burnt orange ditzler code 2576

Hmm?? I would've thought medium copper would have been more copper than orange.
