7.3L stalling at take-off

I've been having problems with my PSD 7.3L stalling at takeoff. If I mash the accelerator down hard it won’t stall, however if I leave the line at a respectable pace the truck will stall 65% of the time. The truck will also stall when going in reverse. It seems to stall when letting off of the accelerator at lower speeds as well.

I changed the CPS to an International over a year ago and have had no problems with it (until now?).

The thing that concerns me most is if I keep the pedal accelerating steady it’s almost like I get a moment where I hit the nitro button. The truck slightly lunges forward and there is very excessive chatter, then things seem to level out. I do not get any of these symptoms at higher speeds, i.e. 10 MPH or more.

I don't know where to start ... CPS ... injectors ... fuel pump ... Anyideas would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Check engine light has never come on any time it has stalled. The engine always starts right back up.

I assume it's an automatic. The lunging at low speeds has me thinking it might be in the tranny. And it stalls in reverse you said? Does it act like you're letting the clutch out on a manual tranny when it stalls?

Is the problem worse when the truck is warmed up?

Yes, it is an automatic. To say lunge may be misleading. It seems like it "lunges" because it gets more fuel which matches the large increase in engine chatter. It almost like its not getting fuel, then gets an influx of fuel.

It does seem to get worse as the engine warms up.

I rarely tow and have not had any indication that the transmission is having problems. That being said I wont rule it out if you have experience with a similar issue. The truck has almost 190,000 miles.

It doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping, it just feels like someone turned the key off.

OK, The problem I had with one of my trucks was the transmission Torque Converter clutch was engaging at idle and killing the truck. If I kept one foot on the gas and one on the brake, I could keep it running at a stop, but not easily. Shifting it into reverse was a chore. It would try to take off real fast without touching the gas pedal. Sometimes it would stall.

What year is the truck? Is it stock, or have you done any modifications to it?

Truck birth is 2003, 100% stock minus the International CPS.

Hopefully some other folks will chime in here. I know that having good, fresh oil makes a difference in these trucks.

What oil is in it?

How long since it's been changed?

I am pretty religious on oil changes. I'm not due for another 2,000 miles. I have put Shell Rotella 15W/40 in since I purchased it with 80k miles.

I am having the same problem in reverse! I'm thinking its something inside the trans like pump, TC or something. I'm going to call Brian tomorrow. Hopefully he can get me straightened out and I'll let you know what I find out.

Check to make sure your IPR still has the tinnerman nut on it, and that it's tight. It will cause these symptoms.

I had someone come to me with the exact same problem. Told him I would take a look at it. Pulled the tranny pan, flushed fluid, and checked the torque on teh valve body. A few of the bolts were out of torque spec. Torqued them to spec, and refilled the tranny with fresh fluid. He says it hasnt done it since.
