Quick 6.4 question.

I have been thinking about buying a 6.4 powerstroke. From what I have heard, all the problems with this engine occur when people do not take care of the DPF properly. Doing maintenance as they are advised by the dealerships, is this accurate?

No. Aside from putting DPF fluid into the tank, I don't think there is any specific DPF system maintenance.

The issues I have heard about involve the fuel injection system and over-fuel situations. which lead to catastrophic failure.

I recommend you visit the 6.4L power Stroke engine forum and do some reading.

Redford is correct. There is no maintenance for the DPF system. Other problems with the 6.4L come from people chipping them, which could lead to teh problems he described. They also had issues with the radiator, but as long as the recall work was done to them, for the most part that issue was resolved. If overall maintenance is done religiously, the engines have been pretty good.

Wrong engine. The 6.4 does not have DEF which I think you were referring to about the fluid.

Yup, I was thinking of the 6.7L brute. Thanks for the correction.
