2000 5.4L mods.
I have a 2000 F-350 5.4L i installed a Diablo delta chip (good improvment in power and shifting) I also ordered a Airaid cold air intake and i am thinking about either Flowmaster or gibson cat-back exhaust system the combo seem to give you the best bang for the buck all three cost around $750-$1000 u can go further and replace mass air flow sensor, headers, high flow cats.....

I have a 2000 Ford Expy Eddie B. 5.4L w/ air ride suspension. So far I've installed a K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit (great throttle response) and Flowmaster cat-back exhaust. I plan to add an Airaid Throttle body spacer and exhaust headers (if I can find someone reputable tha makes them). So far I've spend about $400 and I have made decent gains.

Old Cane,
While I can't tell you how these mods would affect your mileage pulling horses, because I don't own any horses =), I can tell you that they have not had a negative effect on my gas mileage. As a rule though, always keep the stock parts that you are replacing such as the intake system (if you get an aftermarket intake), so that you can switch it back if you choose to. And you can always sell whatever you don't need on eBay. Good luck.

I have a 99 f150 supercab with a 5.4l v8, I have put in an airaid intake, helix throttle body spacer, bbk 75mm throttlebodie, mass airflow sensor, gibson headers, dual 3" exhaust with a magnaflow dual in dual out muffler, and no cat converters I did have a superchip before i put in the headers mass airflow sensor and throttlebodie, planning on selling the chip and buying a diablo sport chip with the special programming for those mods. I have probably doubled the horses in my truck as it is and i have spent around 1500 bucks, you may not go as extreme as i did but my first mods where the magnaflow catback exhaust and airaid intake that made a deffinate improvement in my horses. If you go with an intake i would recomend a Volant because they are the only intake system that is true cold air, they have a box that mounts to the fender well where the stock intake mounts to. I would probably switch my intake to that but i'm planning on buying a ram air hood with a ram air kit so i wont need to do that to get the true cold air intake.
As far as the gas mileage goes just about everything you do will accually help your gas mileage, especially the exhaust. Not sure how it would do with pulling horses. But since you are going to be pulling a lot of waite i would recomend just going with cat back exhaust i'v heard that opening up the exhaust too much will kill your torque because it doesn't have enough back pressure in the engine. Hope this helps
