How much SCA??

I am simply draining my coolant and refilling with the green stuff. How much, if any of the SCA should I add? 97 7.3 Thanks.

YOU should buy some test strips just to be sure...but IIRC for a complete system flush it is around 3 of the FORD bottles ....I would have to go outside and check the actual volume of each unit (maybe 1 litre)

3 pints was what I had in my head and did a quick google search to confirm (searching google is most often faster than searching the threads lol).

Well, from the link you gave me, if you scroll down to the post by "roadrunter" he has it exactly as my manual states, i just looked it up. After a system drain, add 4 pints of the sca. Then,,,8-10 oz. every 15k mi. That's simple.

This is from the ford supplemental diesel manual...

Replacing coolant
A coolant mixture of 50% coolant concentrate and 50% water is
recommended to maintain best overall performance. To avoid damaging
the engine and radiator, the coolant concentrate should not exceed 60%.
When refilling the coolant system either as part of the regular
maintenance (48 months, or 80 000 km [50 000 miles], whichever comes
first and then every 36 months or 48 000 km [30 000 miles], whichever
comes first), or due to service performed, adhere to the following
instructions:
1. Drain and flush the cooling system to remove dirt deposits, oil, rust
particles.
2. Add 1.89L (4 pints) of supplemental coolant additive FW-15, directly
to the cooling system. An additional 237–295 ml (8–10 oz.) of
supplemental coolant additive FW-15 should be added at 24 000 km (15
000 mile) intervals to maintain proper concentration.
3. Fill the coolant reservoir with the specified coolant/water mixture until
the level stabilizes at the top hose fitting. Replace and tighten cap. Fill
the radiator when cold. Level the coolant in the coolant bottle.
4. Reinstall the coolant bottle cap.
5. Start and idle engine until the radiator upper hose is warm
(approximately 10–15 minutes). If the hose does not get warm then
repeat at a higher engine speed.
6. Immediately shut off engine. Cautiously remove coolant bottle cap and
add coolant to Cold Fill mark.

Hey, white-horse, that's some good info. And thanks for the reminder that I need to test my systems.

Hmm, interesting. I thought the PSD didn't need it at all, and the IDI was what needed it. I know many people running OBS PSDs with over 200K and never touched SCAs. That's why I raised the question.

^exactly. I always run SCA in diesels, and even my high-performance gasoline engines.

In Gooch's coolant thread it explains the pre 1999 and after 1999 manufacturing dates and that the older engines need additive.

The SD motors can use Extended Life Coolant that doesnt need additives. At least that is what I have in my head... Check the thread its in there.
