2013 expl sport oil change frustration
Bought the wife and I a 2013 explorer sport, 3.5 eco boost twin turbo and its fantastic. changed oil to mobil 1 after 400 miles, again at 5000 miles and today at 10,800. Alright- not to sound like a complete idiot but i did it myself today at my shop after all my techs went home. The manual and all data says 5.7 qts. Not a hard task- Mobil 1 comes in a 5qt jug and got a single qt. I added the 5qts, checked the level on the dipstick it was right at the bottom of the hash marks. Added the .7qt. Now the dip stick has bends in it that the hash marks sit between. Here is where it gets irritating. Wipe the stick put it in with the bumps in the stick facing the engine as it came out and pull it. Oil level is right at the full pin hole. Let the stick sit for 30 seconds and pull it, the level is way past the full mark!!! Wipe it, insert it and pull it after a second or 2 and its perfect. Pull it, insert it and let it sit for a min and check it and its way over the full mark. Strangely the back side of it the level remains ok. What gives??? I mean am I nuts? Flip the stick around so the "bumps and hash marks" face the radiator and do it and it comes out fine... Anyone else have this issue?? I have never encountered this in 15 yrs of being in my shop. The level can't arbitrarily change... Usually if u pull the stick the oil climbs the tube and you can't get a reading because it takes a min for the oil to settle out of the tube. Well just went out to the expl and tried it again after it sat for 3 hours. It's over the full mark with the bumps facing the engine. Put it in for a sec and pull it and its perfect. I don't get it.

Interesting - that does sound a bit odd - but not having changed oil in 15+ years on any of my cars//trucks/bikes/lawnmowers and certainly not yet on our 13 sport with only 7k miles, I'd have to ask someone...
maybe the embossed lettering 'wicks' the oil up the dipstick ??? Maybe call Ford to get the story from the horses mouth ? ! ?
good luck, and keep us posted on your findings...

Interesting issue. In addition to my Ford van, I have a Subaru Forester, and checking the oil on that sounds like the same kind of ballgame...the dipstick goes into the sump at about a 45 degree angle, so the 2 sides of the dipstick read differently. AND, if you pull the dipstick after the car has been sitting for a while, it will read really high, but if you then wipe it off and recheck it, it will read fine. The best theory is that when the vehicle sits, there is some sort of "capillary action" where the oil climbs up the stick somewhat.
I think the approach is to find what works and use it. When changing oil in my Subaru, I put in the spec volume of oil in quarts and it ends up where it should be.
