When I open the rear liftgate on my 08 Expedition Limited, it reachs the top, sounds the closing chime and then closes. My workaround is that I stand underneath the door and hold it up until after about 5 closing cycles it stops and stays open. This started out only happening in very cold weather but is now occurring in cool weather.

Any idea what needs to be fixed/replaced?

You could try resetting the power liftgate.

1.NOTE: The battery must be disconnected for 20 seconds before the module will enter the initialization mode.
Disconnect the battery.

2.Wait 20 seconds and reconnect the battery.

3.Manually close and fully latch the power liftgate.

4.Power open the power liftgate by using the key fob or control switch.

5.Once the power liftgate is fully open, close the power liftgate by using the key fob or control switch.
