Airbag Light

The Airbag light on my 99 Ford Ranger has started flashing recently. It flashes code 27 which I was told meant the passenger airbag on/off light was burned out. I've also read that I will have to replace the entire module since the LED is soldered onto the module.

I was quoted a price of $35 at a local junkyard.

Now, I haven't pulled the module off to look at it but what I was wondering is if the key cynlider is connected to the module or if it is seperate. I don't want to spend $35 and then have to have the cylinder re-keyed or carry two seperate keys with me.

The switch itself is seperate from the module. There is an electrical connector on the switch which you will need to unplug.

P. S. Before replacing the module, make sure you take off both battery cables (negative first) and wait at least 2 minutes for the ABS power supply backup to be depleted.

Let us know how it turns out.

Ok, I got the part from a local salvage yard from a wrecked truck. Put it in last night and the problem is fixed. $35 is a lot better than the price the dealer wanted.

Thumbs up Airbag Light

You also could have soldered in a new bulb for about 2 bucks and that would have solved the problem as well. Glad it's fixed though.

Actually the switch is connected to the module but the switch is not key specific. You can put any ford key in the switch and turn the airbag on or off. You can even put a ford key blank and do it.

Glad to hear that you fixed the problem . I'm not quite sure I follow you though on the part about the module and switch being the same component. Maybe it's different for the '99s I don't know, but the switch on my '98 has an electrical connection that I can see when I remove the ashtray. And my Ford Manual says the switch is a seperate and removable piece.

Airbag Light

It must be different for the 98's. The module on mine is a square box that has the key slot in the center and the LED window in the top right corner. I don't think I can attach pictures to the post but I'll email it if you are that interested.

Probably easier if I posted something about my '98 for a reference point:

For some reason I can't post pictures but it looks like the same part. The manual must be talking about the two pieces being seperate inside the housing.

Airbag Light

First of all, this is an excellent forum. Thanks for the helpful info.

I am getting the same airbag light code on my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT. The on/off light in my airbag control module is out so I assume this is the problem.

Is it safe to assume that the airbags still work even though the on/off light is burned out?

Airbag Light

From what I have read and understand, when the light burns out the system becomes inactive and the airbags will not deploy. I don't know this for a fact but everything I read leads me to believe this.

It would be disabled if the AB light is flashing/on.
