95 f150 5spd fluid

what fluid should i use in my 95 f150 5spd trany. its 4-4 has 165k on it and does shift a little hard. somebody else told me to use 80w engine oil and he was told that by a couple trany rebuilders and that make it shift a lot smoother and thats what i think i might do.

What is a 4-4?

You should have a M5OD. It uses ATF, NOT gear oil of any kind. Any trany BUILDER knows this. If you put gear oil on you will not be able to shift it in the winter and it will be slower shifting in the summer

no, it does NOT. The "quick fix" for worn syncros is Redline MTL 70w-80(about $15 per quart)

Might as well change it while you're down there, especially if the age and mileage is unknown. It is a maintenance item anyways

Ya its probly all original but since the truck is about shot i didnt want to but what would you reccomend for that and how much does it take. Also whats the capacity for the trany and front and rear differentials. I think its 3 qt for the rear and 2 for the front. I already know what im putting in them.

Transfer cases take ATF. As far as capacities, I'd suggest picking up a service manual. The different axles and transmissions over the years all had different capacities and in some cases fluid type requirements.

Regardless, use the correct fluid. Synthetic 30w motor oil will be too "slippery" for the synchros to work correctly. People have had success with GM or Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid in other makes and models, use at your own risk.

Just changed the fluid in my 95 with M5OD and BW 1356 T case. Both call for MERCON (ATF). Haynes manual called for 2 qts for the T case, which I drained 2 and added 2 until it started overflowing. The manual, however, calls for 7 or 8 qts for the M5OD. I drained approx. 4 qts and low and behold, only approx. 4 qts went in before it started overflowing.

So use ATF, and plan on 6 to 10 quarts to change both.

On the diff's remember to use limited slip additive for the rear if needed.
