New to me 2000 f-250 6.8L 4x4, whats next

So I recently traded my 1998 F-150 5.4 for a 2000 F250 6.8L. The super duty was sitting on a lot with body damage to drivers rear bed side and missing a tail gate. My truck and this truck had same mileage 164k and I worked a deal to trade for 500 bucks plus my f-150 that I was very very tired of (i owned that truck since 58k.

I needed a heavier truck with a bit more power for my 26 foot camping trailer. So I think I did ok.

Truck does not leak anything, starts and idles smoothly, feels good driving but has wandering steering (having that checked out) and seems to be as good of taken care of as mine was. onlything was the dealership said everyone stoped to look at the truck but then saw the body damage and walked away.

It does need a bed side, and tail gate and new rear bumper but thats it.

So what are my MUST DOs, and Should do to this truck to get the most enjoyment out of it.

I know I know I wanted a 7.3 but couldnt find one with this kind of deal

thanks

I would check or even change all fluids, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve and shocks. How are the brakes? If warn and used for towing a recommended upgrade is the power slot cryo rotors and hawk lts pads.

Look on craigslist for a 2008 and up tailgate. Only requires paint and a hinge on the driver side.

Check out the V10 forum and Washington forum down below. Welcome to FTE and "pics or it didn't happen"

thanks, I will check out the other sites on this forum. I was going to change all fluids and such, check shocks and steering stabalizer.

a lot of people mention a different Y pipe and looking at the crappy ford design i can see why but what y pipe should I get or have one made??

I dont want to lift it, or anything like that. I just want a good towing rig for the occasional weekend and a truck that I can rely on for hauling stuff from time to time.

but... I also am a gear head so some mods appeal to me.

I kept the K&N from my 1998 and put it in this rig (same part number)

so one mod is done.

Y pipe- SPD, check with 5 star tuning who is a sponsor or go to either spd or 5star website and order for yours via paypal. Some on here have had to wait however mine came pretty quick. Might look into a 5star tune setup as well. Eventually I may go with the SCT livewire with there custom tunes.

Have you done the zoodad mod?

Zoodad Mod is cutting a small hole in the header panel. It allows fresh air from the grill to the air intake suction.

I've seen my IAT drop over 5F sitting in traffic and over 10F driving down the road. Kind of a RAM AIR effect

before

after

now that s..t right there is awesome. I was looking at that when I put that k&n in and wondering where the air comes from... someone should make a nice adapter to make that filter true ram air.

Congrats on the new truck and welcome to FTE. I think you will be more pleased with the 6.8 than a 7.3 anyways.

hey thanks, I do like the 5.4 I had in my f150 and I personaly put 100k on it (purchased it used with 54k) and had only one problem with the motor/trans. this seems similar to the 5.4 but alot more room to work on it due to larger engine bay.

It drives very nicely except for the spooky wandering in front end. I think I will do the spd y pipe, the mod for the air box opening and just enjoy it.

oh btw my over head was broken so I fixed (thanks to this site) and the economy shows 12.9 crusing at 65-70 ish down the freeway. is that normal?

I dont put too much faith into those fuel mileage estimators.

I always hand calculate my mpgs on every tank. I ran close to 500 miles this weekend in mine(Kingsport to Lexington and back) at 75 mph and I got 15.36 mpgs. Most on here seem to get between 10 to 16, but there are too many variables to factor in to say what is "normal." 12.9 sounds about right though.

yes, it works on all 4 motors offered in the Superduty up to the 6.2L. I haven't seen that airbox yet.

the 5.4, 6.0, 7.3, and 6.8 all have the airbox in the exact same spot. the 5.4 and 6.8 actually use the same airbox.

Using my Scangauge II, I've seen my IAT temps drop significantly with the Zoodad

Beware...after market Y pipes can lead to something referred to as "flutter". An anoying resonance as a result of airflow thru the Y. My fear of the flutter has kept me from ditching the stock piece.

hmmm interesting but does anyone have a sound capture of this noise. I am sure in a truck some different noises wouldnt bother me, my x5 on the other hand would.

also the air flow mod..... has anyone had problems with water doing this. driving in heavy rain you would suspect that there is a bit of water getting sucked into there also. would you drill a hole in bottom of air box for a just in case to drain, or maybee a small deflector mounted over the hole you hog into that rad support??? just a question going through my mind as it rains so hard here right now you cannot see the other side of parking lot....
