Intermittent Brakes, Transmission grinding and popping out of reverse...
F350 1991 IDIT 5-Speed 2wd. My fathers truck is having a few problems, the transmission I would say is mostly his fault as ever since he got it, being in a hurry, he would quickly go into reverse grinding all the way. Now its really bad and he has parked it till it goes into the shop next week.
His on his way home tonight, he said he lost power brakes and the later regained them, the belt to the vacuum pump is good and properly tightened. All his brakes as well as most his brake lines plus E-brake cables were replaced a couple months ago.
Thoughts?

you have exactly 3 options for the possible cause: bad vacuum pump, bad brake booster, or a damaged vacuum hose or connection somewhere in the system.
to start diagnosing it, attach a vacuum gage to an unused port on the vacuum tree, start the engine, and watch how the gage responds. it should build up strong vacuum quickly, with a minimum acceptable reading of 17"hg. and readings of around 25 being found on a new pump. and it should get there fairly quickly. in my experience, a pump thats slow to make vacuum is often dealing with a loose or damaged hose somewhere in the system. try pinching off different hoses leaving the vacuum tree to see if any of them cause your readings to increase. if one does, look for a problem on that line.
for the tranny issue, i guess he got what was coming to him for abusing it. hope its not too expensive to fix!

Now this is funny, we found another 350 only this is an 1987 E-350 with a 6.9 diesel engine. 62000 miles, C6 transmission. Fully functioning ambulance refit as a service truck.
If it checks out, going to buy it as his new work vehicle, something he has always wanted...
So all the work done on his '91 will be swapped over to my truck and this new one as needed if at all possible. Going to see about swapping the service body onto my truck and skipping the flatbed for the time being.
My question is, will his 7.3 IDIT fit my 6.9 IDI with C6 (I think its the C6, power eating 3-speed) with little to no modifications?
