Regen question...

Regen question...
I have put 610 miles (approx 150 miles have been highway) on my truck since I purchased it 3 weeks ago. I haven't noticed any regen yet. I have been reading about them and it seems as though they happen between 100-400 miles. I also read that there shouldn't be any soot on your exhaust tailpipes. After reading this, I immediately went out to check mine, I did notice some black soot on the inside of my tailpipes. I have included a video of what I wiped out. Personally, I always thought there should be some soot on the inside, but then again, I've never had a diesel before. Is the amount of soot that I wipe out too much or am I just being overly paranoid?
Thanks
Dave

odds are you have a cracked dpf. rev engine to 3k in nuetral let off pedal and watch for puff of smoke.
next there is a fail safe for regen the pcm will force at aprox 650mi if it has not happened.
i dont recall the exact milage but belive i have stated in another thread prior

Thanks though, I appreciate the info.

You prob won't pass emissions test. It's just not filtering the exhaust like it typically would. Pressures aren't building which isn't triggering a regen cycle. I don't see that causing any problems with the truck or its performance. But I'm sure someone will chime in and say otherwise.
If it is cracked and you decide to replace, don't buy new from a dealer. I'm sure you can find one online or Craigslist for 1/4 of the price. Possibly used from someone in a neighboring state that doesn't have smog checks.

Thanks though, I appreciate all the feedback from everyone.

5yr/100k on on warranty for emissions stuff. It won't hurt your truck to run It cracked. Mine was cracked before I deleted it. 6-700 miles with only one regen was pretty nice. If you have emissions test though, it prObably won't pass.

Thanks for the info. If I decide to fix it, I'll take it to the dealer because its under warranty. I bought the truck about 3 weeks ago and it was a certified preowned. Plus, I'm pretty sure there is a federal mandated emissions warranty of 5/50,000.
Thanks though, I appreciate all the feedback from everyone.

If you don't end up putting on a California approved tuner you can get a gauge that will plug into you truck so you can monitor all you trucks vital needs and you will be able to tell when it goes into regen by increased exhaust temps read by the gauge.

Thanks for the info everyone.
I have an appointment with the service department at 9am on Thursday.
Not very confident though because the guy I talked with on the phone said "its normal to see a little black soot on the tailpipe." I told him that I hadn't noticed it regen, and then he said I could bring it in and they would check everything. He even said this "if you look at gasoline autos, you'll even seen a little black soot around their tailpipe too." Well it's not a gasoline auto and I don't know why he'd compare it to one.
