NEED HELP WITH FUEL GAUGE!!

Hey guys and gals i need some help with wit fuel gauge on my 1995 f150 5.8 4x4.

I've searched and searched this issue and cant find anything on it so heres what it does.

Every once and awhile my gauge will work fine for a little bit and then it just jumps to way past full (ground issue) and it will stay there for sometime and go back to normal eventually, maybe in 5 min or two weeks. I have looked at the plug back by the gas tank, took the cluster out and checked back there, and by the kick panel and still nothing so any help would be wonderful!! Thanks in advance!

Does it usually do it at a certain point in tank level? for instance around 3/4 or 1/2 tank? The ground issue could be internal on the sending unit. It could also be whe wire connection on the sending unit itsself. Either way you will have to drop the tank

I would agree that dropping the tank is probably the only way to determine the issue. You may also want to remove the pump and have someone watch the gauge on the dash while you move the float up and down and check the wiring. You might get lucky, wiggle just the right wire and the gauge pegs, identifying the short.

As said above the open is more than likely with the wiper arm that sweeps across the resistance element in the sending unit.
You might be able to clean it or bend it slightly to make better contact.

Thank you guys a bunch! i might still try to drop it today.

i havent really seen a pattern for when it does decide to peg out but it does it whenever i have over half a tank.
