Type of rear-end?

I replaced my original 55 rear end with one from a 69 F100. I've got a leak on the axle seal. Auto parts guy tells me that there are 3 types of seals depending on the type of assembly I have. The tag that was attached to the differential housing reads. "WDM-S 9EA 25 9. 313B" Does this tell me what type of assembly I have.
Thanks for any help.

WDM-S: Fits: 1965/69 F100 and 1970 F100 before serial number J30,001.

From serial number J30,001: Ford changed the differential bearings from ball bearings to the Slim Line tapered roller bearing design.

note. nl stands for non-locking.

Thanks!

Thank you for the rear-end info. My son and I are replacing the axle seal today!

You're welcome but NumberDummy should get the credit. I located an old thread where he had given the above info to someone else. I didn't think he'd mind if I cut and pasted his info for you.
Jeff
BTW, there is a gasket behind that plate you'll be taking off to remove the axle.

can the axle seals be replaced without removing the pressed on bearings?
I need to replace mine but the shops want almost as much as a press would cost to change them.

If your 9" now has ball bearing style bearings then yes. The axle seal mounts in to the rear end housing then the axle and bearing assembly goes in. If your rear end now has Tapered Bearings then I think the bearing does have to be pressed off. I'm not 100% sure. It's been many, many years since I've seen one still mounted. But that's the way I remember it. You see on the Tapered style the seal is like an end cap of the bearing. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon to back me up.

BTW GEMBONE, you might pull whichever side is leaking and see which bearing style your truck now has before buying the seals. I've seen trucks in the past that had one each put in by someone!

I had not thought about the possibility that they could have been switched at different times. I always do both sides at the same time. Thanks for bringing that up.
I am still debating whether or not to change the gear ratio and will wait to do the seals and bearings once I decide. If I go ahead and change them then I know I should have a good long time before they are needed again.

Funny how I was reading your thread when you sent this through. I'm also a change it all so I don't have to worry about it later kinda guy also. Last I went through a 9" I bought everyrthing from Randy's Ring And Pinion. Price check them with whomever else to try. Make sure you get a new press collar if you have the bearings pulled.
