I need opinions please!! MOTOR SWAP?!

Hello my friend has a really nice 92 7.3 Idi f250 he wants to swap motors in. He says its to slow and all that crap. I say we turn the pump up but he knows he won't be happy?.... So anyways how hard is it to make this thing a powerstroke? He has a complete 95 7.3 auto. Or is he better off doing a first gen cummins swap?

My opinion... That first gen cummins wasn't fast at all (yes he wants speed...) when I drove it and a 95 7.3 conversion sounds very complicate on the electrical part. Maybe I'm wrong?

It would be cheaper for him to sell the truck and buy a truck with a 7.3L Powerstroke motor.

If he wants speed, tell him to buy a mustang and keep his speed off the public roadway, away from me and my loved ones.

yes there are places for speed, like maxton, boneville, heck i've even done it in a large wide open pasture. i can say that above 90 ish mph these trucks have a ton and i mean a TON of aerodynamic lift on them making them very unstable and downright dangerous

Truck + speed + bad things + $$$ = more headaches then you want...

if your friend wants a power stroke, I agree just sell the truck or trade it in for one with the power stroke, if hes wanting speed get a mustang or something like that, but also I would advise him to keep the high speeds on the track, and off the roads...

and to reitterate...and please remind your friend of this...trucks are designed to haul and for work, not speed, and are properly geared to put the pulling power to the road...

a turbo and turned up pump will make that IDI even to a first generation powerstroke.

if he wants speed and HP, tell him to sell th e diesel and buy a mustang. diesel trucks are work horses, not race cars.

Amen to that, and trucks in general are work horses...

and as for the first generation turd swap, the factory stock 1988 7.3 naturally asperated IDI made more HP and torque than the 1988 dodge turd turbo diesel.

I'm used to driving my 02 Powerstroke and no I don't beat it at all. If it was my friends truck he would be racing everyone. Then wonder why his truck is broke. But just cruising that first gen cummins it seemed worse than the Idi in my opinion. I think I convinced him to suck it up and deal with the Idi. He can worry about it when it blows up!

if she's really slow, meaning you can put your foot right to the floor and the thing just kinda sits there and slowly gains speed without a good pull feeling to it and would take forever to get to 80-90 mph (test it at the track) then probably she's just long overdue for a tuneup.
the only time an idi truck should be slow,is when loaded up and pulling a hill,or towing.
if you don't think you could hold WOT in front of a cop without him flashing the blues and writing you up for impudent speed then it's highly likely she's in need of fresh injectors,ip and a timing adjustment or the thing is just all worn out and doesn't have decent compression anymore (and probably all of the above with it.)

tune one up,and install a turbo, and there is no way in hell, you could take off WOT in front of a cop without getting pulled over and wrote up.despite the speed limit.he'll get ya for taking off too fast.unless you tried this on the interstate.then most likely you'd get away with it.on a normal road,i really doubt it.id never try it,put it this way.wouldn't have before the turbo either.
these engines have nothing in the form of auto tune like modern engines.if left alone, they slowly go to crap over the years.
the bad part is,is that even despite being the most economical diesel engine to ever rest in the f-series,it'll still set you back a grand or more for a set of injectors,ip and timing equipment.
then it's around another grand for a used turbo to really get her to go.
those couple grand could surpass the trucks value now,so they're often just run into the ground instead.this is why alot of idi trucks out around there now, feel like total dog mush.
most who have a few grand to play with, invest them in more modern and powerful engines of course.this isn't ever going to change.if your bro has several grand for a fummins project, then let him have his fun.an old idi truck would have bored the heck out of me as a kid (keeping in mind as i say this, even would a modern diesel equip truck would have.) for real fast fun you need to start with a car,not some old work truck.

Let me ask you this. When you take off in your Idi at just a normal acceleration what rpms is it normally doing? He says he has to do 3k in order to keep up with traffic. As in run the rpms all the way to 3k consistently until he's up to whatever the speed limit is. And he has so much money into this truck already he won't sell it that's why he wants to figure it out and simply fix the problem. The previous owner didn't maintain it at all but rust wise this truck is very nice it came from Oklahoma. I under stand why everyone is saying but a mustang I've been there done that! I used to have a mustang. At the same time he doesn't have extra money like that. Regardless! I always tell him to beat his Saturn and not the truck! Honestly I'm really leaning towards the injection pump is shot.... What are the signs?
