Breathing Some Life into my OBS...

Just wanted to share what I've been working on for about a year now.

I've got this on PSN as well, but I think FTE gets a lot more activity these days. Bit of a choppy read at first as I'm copying a years worth of work into one night.

I'll start by saying this is NOT a restoration. More like "freshening up" an old truck, and giving it some long overdue attention in the cosmetic and maintenance department. I don't have the money or the desire to make this a show truck, just a weekend warrior that still turns a few heads.

After countless rust-belt trucks, I decided to start my project off with a rust-free foundation. So I flew out west to get my truck, and drove 1200 mi back to Ohio (without 1 problem )

Here is the REAL condition of the paint. DONE.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0487.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0487.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0487.jpg"/></a>

I was able to remove the moldings and save them. I used 1 roll of 30lb fishing wire, a plastic putty knife, and all the skin on my knuckles.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0584.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0584.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0584.jpg"/></a>

Next step - Soda Blasting

I removed all the trim, badges, grill, etc before blasting, but looking back I wish I had removed all the glass and interior prior to blasting. I can't say for sure why I didn't think about it at the time, I guess I was just eager to get it done.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0633.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0633.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0633.jpg"/></a>

All the interior and glass coming out…

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0686.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0686.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0686.jpg"/></a>

Windshield will come out at the body shop, as well as the bumpers, bed & doors...

Went ahead and drilled the holes for the cab lights (Thanks for the write-up Brad)

Plan right now is to swap the suspension from my RC to my CC, and possibly do an RSK on the RC.

So in the mean time I've been polishing up the RC. Got the wheels all buffed out, which hadn't been REALLY done since I bought them new in '05.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1997%20F350/photo.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1997%20F350/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo.jpg"/></a>

Wet-sanded w/3000
DA w/5000 wool pad
DA w/ foam LC pad & polish
DA w/ foam LC pad & concourse polish
LSP w/ Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant

And you can't see it, but I DID pop these off the bead so I could polish the lip without hitting the tire. Got some Dyna-Beads to add in there as well.

The end DEFINITELY justifies the means

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0838.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0838.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0838.jpg"/></a>

Did these by hand, probably need a little more polishing

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0840.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/IMG_0840.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_0840.jpg"/></a>

Picked up some pieces to the puzzle while the trucks been in the body shop.

Got some clear glass for the rear doors, and a solid rear clear glass to replace the slider. Now at least all the tint will match.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-3.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo4-3.jpg"/></a>

Well, they got the door jams cut in, as well as the doors. Bed is unbolted and slid back. They should start getting some paint down this week.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo3-4.jpg"/></a>

Also worked on detailing a few of the owner's cars

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/Miscellaneous/photo2-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/Miscellaneous/photo2-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo2-1.jpg"/></a>

Making some progress on the old truck. Wet-sanded the doors and first stage of buffing. 2 are hung today for fitment, 2 more tomorrow. It'll get polished more once it's all back together.

Black don't lie

Tailgate needs blocked out one more time, then it will get shot early next week. Oh - I ended up having them fix a used tailgate for this truck, in lieu of using my new OEM one. I'd like to save that for my regular cab.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo5_zps884ebf71.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo5_zps884ebf71.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo5_zps884ebf71.jpg"/></a>

Picked up a few more parts.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1_zps31dedbda.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1_zps31dedbda.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1_zps31dedbda.jpg"/></a>

The previous owner TRIED to mount some grab handles in the truck, so I'm left with replacing trim pieces with holes. Luckily it's only around the headliner. All I could get locally was tan, so I painted them to match. Well, match as close as possible.

Old on right, repainted replacement on left.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-5.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-5.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-5.jpg"/></a>

Picked up a few more things…
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-6.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-6.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-6.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-6.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-6.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo2-6.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-5.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-5.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo3-5.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo4-4.jpg"/></a>

They also got the hood and tailgate cut-in.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo-1.jpg"/></a>

Well some progress is being made, but not TOO much. The hood, cowl, and tailgate got painted, sanded & buffed in the last week.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-7.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo2-7.jpg"/></a>

Also started working on finding the molding for the truck. I think I have found all of it but if I'm doing the math right it's going to be close to $700!

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-7.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-7.jpg"/></a>

The bed is painted, and I got most of the wetsanding done. Still need to cut & buff again to get all the orange peel and haze out, which you can see in the pics. And I decided to leave the holes in the front for the camper brackets, because well, you never know!

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-8.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-8.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-8.jpg"/></a>

Paint is DONE. Still needs a final buff though.

Now I get to put it all back together.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-8.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-8.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo3-8.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo4-7.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo4-7.jpg"/></a>
Took the truck down to the garage today. Didn't really have time to do much else.
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-11.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-11.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-11.jpg"/></a>

I did get to work on detailing a pretty sweet 65 LeMans today

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/Miscellaneous/photo1-1-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/Miscellaneous/photo1-1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-1-1.jpg"/></a>

Small amounts of progress are being made. Got the rear door glass replaced and the front door glass installed. Ended up figuring out how to do it without removing all the guts in the door. Also been spending time doing all the tedious stuff like cleaning all the weatherstripping, polishing the door handles, cleaning/greasing all the door internals. You know, crap that no-one really cares about lol.

Ended up finding a good deal on Dynamat on C-List.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-1-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo3-1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo3-1-1.jpg"/></a>

Picked up a few more things for the truck...

(My Cyber-Monday purchase)

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-1-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-1-1.jpg"/></a>
<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-1-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-1-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo2-1-1.jpg"/></a>

(Picked this up on C-List as well - HPOP gauge & pillar, just happen to be from CP)

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-2-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-2-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-2-1.jpg"/></a>

Well the PO got a little trigger-happy with the screw gun when installing the dash mat. So I found a replacement. What a PAIN IN THE ***. If you can pull the dash in these trucks and successfully get it all back together then I believe you can do ANYTHING else to them.

Ok - 'nuff complaining

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-12_zpsa501da49.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-12_zpsa501da49.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-12_zpsa501da49.jpg"/></a>

Interior is 80% back in. Gauges are hooked up, although I think I hooked up the HPOP gauge wrong. Gotta go back and look at that. Dash is all back together. Headliner is in. Glass is all in. Picked up some LED's from SuperBrightLEDs.com for the dash. They are AWESOME. Will be doing the same for the RC.

Been trying to figure out some wiring mess that the PO had going on with a TC lockup switch, electric tranny fan and a manual glow plug switch Also it appears the AC MOD has been done to this truck.

More soon. Maybe. Well probably not REAL soon...

Stripped/polished the Alcoas along with some new rubber (315/75R16) - yeah yeah I know everyone hates All-Terrains

Gonna look killer once the trim is back on it, eh? Still gotta finish all the sanding/buffing first.

Still working. SLOWLY

Finally a sunny day around here. This is the payoff for taking my sweet *** time.

Reflection in the rear door

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-1-3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo1-1-3.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-1-3.jpg"/></a>

A little better shot of the clarity

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-2-2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1995%20F350%204x4/photo2-2-2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo2-2-2.jpg"/></a>

Also picked up a cap over the weekend from a nice guy in Indy rebuilding an OBS with his son.

<a href="http://s238.photobucket.com/user/ctrlissues/media/1997%20F350/photo1-2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff304/ctrlissues/1997%20F350/photo1-2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo1-2.jpg"/></a>

That sums up everything from 6/1/12 - NOW. More to come

WOW! That is turning into one awesome F350. Love it! It didn't look bad before you started.

Your regular cab looks like my truck's big brother. Haha...

I like the BFG ATs better than the more aggressive tires. I do prefer to mount them black wall out and paint the white lettering black though.

Did you re-clearcoat the Alcoas? That way you won't have to keep polishing them.

Just curious, what color LEDs did you get for the dash white or green?

Whats the going price of a dash shell?

There is an AC modification for our trucks?

Those are some really sweet classics you guys are working on!

No I did not re-clearcoat the wheels. It's not a DD so I should only have to knock the haze off once every couple years, maybe less.

The LED's are standard white for the dash since the cluster is colored already. The LED's in the gauge pod are green to match the dash.

The dash shell ran me $50, which I didn't think was too bad. Considering it came with a perfect dash pad

Awesome job man! I'm planning the same with my F350. You gave me some nice ideas. Where did you go for your parts? I was thinking of using motorcraft for most of mine, but the interior I guess im having to look elsewhere. Any advice?

I reconditioned/saved anything I could, and bought OEM from the dealer or NOS on fleabay. You'll have to search the junkyards for good interior pieces. I'm still looking for a few things there.

Haha you and I both know what a TRUE show truck is. And this ain't it. But I'm going to do my best to do it right the first time.

Absolutely right. If I could afford another one it would be here. I think another trip out west for a nice '79 is in my future!
