replacing center fuel tank but need advice

I am replacing the center fuel tank on my '93 F-150 truck. Am stumped when trying to re-attach the round rubber connector which is supposed to be slipped into the round hole at the top of the tank. Tried using a small screwdriver, but can't get the bottom 'ring' into the hole at the top of the tank. Anyone who has dealt with this problem and solved it? Any suggestions appreciated.
