misfiring v10
Guess 'cause I'm new i didn't get my post in right, so here goes again: '99 SD 4x4 F350 - washed my engine last night. Engine was cool, been sitting 2 days. Got in it this moring and it misfires like crazy, banging out is what we used to call it, all the way to work - 40 miles away. Got in it a lunch, same thing, hitting on 5 or six cylinders. I always wash my motor - do it periodically - never done this before. Anyone with an idea?

Well, like i said, I'm new here and it looks like i have recieved a warm welcome. But, to your reply, pancartom, I will have to wash the motor again many times before i get rid of the truck. For the rest of you that happen to wonder about what happened - checked it out last night. The coil has a long boot on it that extends down about 2 1/2" and can get a substantial amount of water in it. The block, evidently, does not get hot enough to completely evaporate the water if the water gets trapped in it. Found that if you do want to wash the motor either leave the motor running or - after washing - let it run long enough to evaporate the water. That was my last mistake - letting it stand overnight.
Pancartom - even though your reply was rude, it was the only one and Iappreciate that - at least.

Not a bad idea (i.e. blow out your plug holes) if you wash your engine - Check out the following thread where rob_n_houston had rusty plugs....

Thanks, men. I appreciate the help. Truck's been in the shop several times and still the problem exists. I also believe it's a coil and will probably take it to another dealer. McLarty Ford mechanic stated Monday that his crew is better than those I have taken it to. You know - "Mine is better than your's" story. But, gotta do something - I pull 12,000 to 15,000 LB of equipment with this thing sometimes.
Again, thanks for all the input

This could be completely off-the-wall, but I've read several times on this forum how dainty the MAF sensor wires are. It also seems like the symptoms were very similar. Could pressure washing have broken one of these little wires?
I didn't answer before, because I know I'm out of my league, but I thought maybe a different perspective could help. Oh well, "Stupid Is As Stupid Does" - flame away!

Okay - Sequence of problems
(1) May 9th - Felt surge in motor, then a slight stumlbe - not bad
(2) May 19th - More stumbling - took it to Ford place
(3) Ford replaced vaccum line (90 deg ell was crushed - the one running from TB to PCV - No help - They said it could be plugs
(4) Washed motor to clean off dust, etc before replacing plugs
(5) Changed plugs - no help
(6) Back to Ford - they replaced MAF sensor - no help
(7) Drove it a couple of days - been back to Ford several times with no help
(8) Called several Ford places in 4 states area - not one had a mechanic who had experience with V10 - said not many of them come in and when they did it was minor, 1st grader stuff
(9) Now I am (along with you men and women of FTE) diagnosing it myself. Still haven't got it figured out
Thought I would take out the K&N, clean the MAF (carefully) and reinstall the Std Paper type - run for awhile. Then - if that didn't work - take off every coil and check them individually with a meter - I think 12,000 to 15,000. If that didn't work check every injector - might as well go ahead and get all the o-rings.
What's got me is that there is no "Service Engine Light" Will keep ya'll posted

Take it to a trusted independant and better yet, a friend/mechanic. Have them scan it and run self-test, several times a code isn't thrown but it will be diagnosed during self-test. I experienced similar symptoms, no code without running self-test 3 times, then 0402 code (i think) EGR flow problem. Fixed it...

Well i decided to go to the dealer right away. it was the coil pack. My dealer is a ford truck dealer. No cars. they deal in heavy truck and light truck. They have service from 7am to 11pm mon-fri. took them 10 min and found it. they let it cool and then changed it in about 1 and a half hr total. Bayshore ford in new castle delaware. the best.
