1966 F100 Shortbed Styleside Full Stock Resto Build Thread

Hey, I'm new here. Our shop just started a full restoration of a '66 F100 back to stock specs. I'll post thge progress here, and I'm sure we will need plenty of help with technical questions! It was originally light tan and white two-tone. It's pretty straight, complete, and rust-free apart from the outer edges of the floors and radiator support. It had a 302 added at some point but the owner still has the original 360(?) and three speed transmission, the engine has been rebuilt already. The cab and doors are currently at the media blasters.













This a picture that the owner sent us. The bottom and top of the roof was light tan.

Teardown pics.


Fiberglass patches in the floor and kick panel, not a good sign...




Found the original masking lines under the trim and behind the bed.






Front clip, bed, and doors removed.






Engine/trans removal.

We had the frame sandblasted and I shot it with a few coats of PPG DPLF epoxy, let it sit over the weekend and lightly wetsanded it this morning with 500 grit to knock down the orange peel and nib the dust/trash.

Very nice, didn't take too long to strip her down, what kind of a time frame are you on?

So the way I read your thread it is a stock resto so the 360 is going back in it? All the way back to original?


BTW Fleetside is a Chebby deal over here it is called styleside.lol Don't let Jowilker see you make any Chebby references.

No 360's until 1968. 1965/67 F100/350: Only available V8: 352 2V.

Styleside: Ford / Fleet(side): Chevrolet/GMC

Thanks for the welcome! It will be a near 100% stock/factory restoration, as close as we can get it. The 360 is going back in. We will try to replicate the factory colors, materials, masking lines, chalk marks, etc. as closely as possible. We'll need help determining many of those details as we go along. We are currently working on the truck 1-2 days a week as we mainly do auto glass replacement at the shop. No date to have it done by, they always take longer than planned anyways so no point in setting a date this early. It's been at the shop about three weeks since the owner dropped it off.

I'll have to admit that I'm a VW and Chevy guy, and that Fords never really interested me much until lately so I'm not up on the Ford lingo yet! My first two cars were mid '60s bugs, and my first full restoration was a '65 C10. I still have the VW's, and I bought a '66 C10 short/fleet Custom Cab a couple years ago that I'm slowly building into a resto-mod/pro-touring daily driver with a LS/T56 swap and major suspension upgrades. My dad still has the '69 Ranger that his dad bought new and I want to get it back on the road one day, so don't think that I dislike Fords... I almost bought a '68 Ranger three weeks ago.

As for the pics, we have about 300 photos to document the tear-down process so we'll know how to reassemble everthing exactly like it was. Or most of everything atleast! We bag and labeled all of the hardware and small parts and labeled the wiring harness too. Ill post a link to all of those pictures tomorrow when I'm back at the shop. Most of them are pretty boring but they'll be a huge help to us when we start reassembly.

Thanks for that info, I was just posting what I was told it was. It could be that they added the 360 later, or it could be a 352- I will check for casting or serial numbers on the block and post them here.

Just edited the title to change from fleet to styleside.

Serial number is the last 6 digits of the 11 digit VIN

No VIN or serial number on mechanical/body parts. Numbers matching is a GM thing.

Hidden frame VIN located atop right (passenger) side frame rail, partially under or in front of cab.

VIN also stamped on Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch. VIN on Warranty Plate not for registration/title purposes.

Casting number (depending on what its prefix is) and date code from engine block might pin it down somewhat.

Casting numbers are foundry marks, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

4th digit of VIN is the engine code. 1965 F100/350 352 2V: D

Ford confusion: 1966/67 F100/350 352 2V VIN engine code: Y / 1968/76 F100/350 360 2V VIN engine code: Y

No 302's until 1969 (F100's only thru 1974).

As Bill stated, post the Warranty Plate info that is on the left door and make sure it matches the title and it will tell you what motor was in it. Simple. BUT, 360,

Not only did I buy a 1968 F250 Ranger new, but 1965 F100 as well.

The Masked Rider is alluding to VIN on Warranty Plate matching VIN on registration/title. Sometimes they do not match, because...

People replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, their brains were on the fritz, so they failed to install the original Warranty Plates on the replaced doors.

Marion Michael Morrison was called "Duke" long before director Raoul Walsh changed his name in 1931 to John Wayne. Wayne taken from General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, Revolutionary War hero.

Boyhood pals began calling him "Duke" because that was the name of his Airedale!

Yeah, I don't mind the name Fritz. At least these days. As I think we already talked about it on the phone Bill, when I was very young, I used to get in a LOT of fights because of the name Fritz. It was just after the war with Germany when I was born and of course my parents were both German immigrants that made it to the US during a 'time of war', and of course had to stay at Ellis Island until they learned English enough to take the test and take the oath to become American citizens. Very proud parents. They did it the LEGAL way. They not only became citizens, they both joined the Army Air Corps. In fact, all of our family ended up military. AND damn proud of it. I'll drink to that...
