Headlight issues... HELP!

I have a 04 F150 FX4 4X4... was heading to the gym the other night and all of the sudden the headlights started to flicker, then shut off completely. The fog lights still work and now the headlights only come on occasionally, such as:

Headlight switch is in the on position, fog lights on (no headlights yet), when I put it in reverse the lights will come on and work perfectly fine. Doesn't do it all of the time, only once in awhile

Headlights flicker and come on for awhile, then shut off

Mostly driving with no headlights right now. I called a mechanic and he noted that it was either the wiring harness or the switch. I can change the switch myself but I wanted to know how to diagnose this problem, or if anyone has had this issue as well.

HELP!!!

It could be the headlight switch. Take the switch out and see if the plug on it is melted or burnt at all.
