Just did the Tightwad Mod...

Found the Tightwad mod on PSN and thought it was right up my alley. Cut down your existing regulator, tap 1/4" npt threads in it, screw in a 5/16" hose barb and viola, Bob's ur uncle. You now have a regulator and can eliminate the fuelbowl.

But wait. You have to filter the fuel before It goes to your injectors. I got a 4770 filter head and a 3528 i think 2 micron filter and mounted it on the inside driverside fender with like 10' of 3/8" fuel line. There are 2 lines that come off the fuel pump when you remove the bowl. The top one is the low pressure coming from the pump, the bottom one is the high pressure to the Injectors. Run the top to the inlet of the filterbase and the bottom one to the outlet and now you are really done. Don't forget to fill the filter with diesel or you will run out of fuel.

I'm going to add electric fuel soon but gonna keep the regulator the way it is. I bought a bowl off ebay incase I screwed up but It came out fine. Might even try to convince my uncle to do it to his.

I took some pics and try to up them soon...

Glad you found the write up on it. I was nervous when I did mine during the conversion to e-fuel, but I figured if I screwed it up I would just have to buy an adj. regulator. I have had mine for over a year now and NO issues at all. I have a pressure gauge on it and hold constant between idle and WOT between 63-66 psi. So much better getting rid of that fuel bowl!

mind posting the link to the instructions you used?

i haven't heard of this one, but it sounds like a way to save a few bucks when doing a DIY e-fuel setup.

here's the link. Joedaddy created the mod and I think is a great one. Saves like 150 bucks when you do efuel because you don't have to buy a aftermarket regulator or any additional fittings. The "Tightwad mod" Fuel Bowl delete and regulated return for peanuts. - PowerStrokeNation : Ford Powerstroke Diesel Forum

I see changing your fuel filter on top of your PCM and IDM being a bad idea...

I REALY REALY like the cut down fuel regulator though, that is epic.

I put the filter there because there were already holes that worked perfectly so didn't have to drill any. I don't see it getting on the IDM but the PCM connector I guess it could but its pretty far from it too.

hijo202: Glad to hear it's worked well for you. I thought this was a great/cheap/reliable alternative to an aftermarket regulator. I like to do mods like this.

Just finished modding my FPR like this... Possibly the easiest mod I've done yet! Gotta make a trip to Tractor Supply tomorrow for my filter setup. Can't wait to see it in action!

question for those who have done this mod - does it seem possible/easy to put a permanently mounted gauge somewhere in the high pressure part of the setup, or is that somewhat out of the scope of this?

i'd like to do e-fuel someday and this seems like a good, cheap first step to get you half-way there.

then I got to thinking that it'd be nice to have an adjustable regulator with a guage so that you can optimize the fuel pressure a little better than just with the BB. but I guess then you're looking at the increased cost of that regulator and gauge...

just some related ramblings...

just did a little quick searching - starting with McMaster of course - and found a $16 adjustable regulator that goes up to 85 psi. problem is it is only spec'd for water and states it has Buna-N seals.

a little searching on what would limit it to only water use and I came across this file: http://www.biodiesel.org/docs/ffs-pe...patibility.pdf

maybe old news for some, but could be a helpful guideline for materials selection on folks doing fuel system work...
