Looking @ 04, advice on price

Hello everyone,

Thanks for indulging on my first post. I recently sold my 04 FX4 which I had for 8 years...a great truck, and I regret losing it, but swapped it for a vehicle for my wife to drive.

Anyways, I've recently come across another truck locally and it has almost everything I would want. It is priced over blue book, however. I'm not sure if the mods will make it worthwhile.

It's a 04 FX4 super cab in yellow ( which I really like ) @ 67,000 miles. It's also Flare side, with a leveling kit, CAI/Chip, and larger tires and rims.

It doesn't have my 2 favorite things ( leather & sun roof ), but I could probably get by without it.

Price is $18,500 and the seller has already said without asking to deal that he's not willing to go much lower and isn't very motivated to sell.

What would you do? I plan on seeing it today in person. Although I like the truck, that price seems a bit unreasonable for this year. That's more than I owe on my newer Mustang!

So, are the mods worth the extra 4k? I know you won't find a truck similar to this again...

I sold my loaded 04 Lariat 4x4 supercrew with leather all options including factory DVD, after market tires and rims along with the factory rims and tires. Had front level kit and rear add-a-leaf. Tinted windows, rain gards, bug sheild, magnaflow exhaust, chrome caps on mirrors, door handles and tail gate. Not a dent on the truck 87,000 miles. Sold it for 12,000. I thought that was a fair price. I would not even think of paying 18,500 for that truck. That range you could be looking at 07-08. Top dollar for that truck would be 13,000. Go find a better deal....that price is not even close.

Thanks for the reply.

I went and saw it tonight, and it was better looking in person....but damn that price.

The good news is it already has had the power window regulators replaced, the spark plugs, rotors, and battery.

The down side is it's condition is what I'd call 7/10. Paint chips on the bumper, a few on the side, chewed up bed trim, no bed liner.

He said he'd sell it for 12k, but he has 10k in mods, so he wants half of that back. Which brings us to $17k.

Of course he says his local dealership friend will sell it for 20, but I don't care. I know it's a hard to find color and style, but it's still quite a bit.

He's not even close. IMHO I think that 13,000 would be the max on that truck. And that is max, 11 to 12 would be more like it. Like I said though, that's just my opinion, ain't worth much.

Modification by rule, do not add anything to the value of a vehicle. However, what a person is willing to pay to obtain a modified vehicle is subject to negotiation.

So it doesn't really matter what he want's to get for his mods, what matters is what you're willing to pay for them.

Negotiate.

It may sound backwards, but I typically reduce the value for "mods"... to me most "mods" = hot rodded junk.

If it is oversized on the tires then the truck doesn't have 67k miles.... unless he reprogrammed the computer to accomodate the tires.

I would probably not give it a second look.

I think he knows he's asking a bit much, because he has been texting me back and forth tonight. Of course, he keeps quoting me retail & reconditioned prices.

NADA says the truck, at most, is worth 15k without the mods.

He's offered to do 17k.

I've found better things on Ebay, but they have higher mileage and are around 20 or 25k.

Thank you for being the voices of reason. It's still tempting, and I have no objections except the price.

Bez, Do your own research on Kelly Blue Book and pick the private party value. You might get your own negotiation points there.

Thanks.

I looked at Edmunds.com, KBB, and NADA.
Of course, there isn't a way to value "mods"...but I did price out what you would pay for the same ones ( minus labor ) on another truck, and it was close to 10k.

Retail price, in great condition, is 15k at best without any add on consideration.

10,000 in mods ??? That guy has some fuzzy math. CIA = 300 Tuner= 500 front level kit = 200, tires ( witch would have to be replaced at this point) = 1,000 and rims= 1200. I come up with 3,000 in mods. The front lift takes about 2 hours of labor and the other mods are quick bolt on. Book value is around 11,000 for that truck. Half back on the mods, 1,500 = 12,500. I would offer 13,000, that is more than a fair price.

I'm with everyone else on this. His calculation of price on his mods is a little off and much like Stuart said, aftermarket mods only increase the value of the truck if you 'want' to pay for them. A dealer will not take aftermarket mods into consideration when you are selling it to them.

Also, his "dealer buddy" would give you a warranty with that kind of price even if only for 30 days. And top that off his dealer buddy wont give him the price he's looking for or else he'd have sold it already.

I am on the 73-79 forum and there is a thread "sentimental value". That is the mystery amount everyone is forgetting! Bez's value and the current owners are not on the same page, let alone the same book!

You can buy my 04 for 10k and with the extra 8500 paint it yellow add leather and a flare side bed. But seriously keep looking 18500 sounds crazy on an 04 to me.
